Title: FCRs finally on and running, some questions though
Post by: hillbillypolack on November 12, 2011, 06:04:12 PM
It's a milestone.  I've wanted to get FCRs on the M900 for about four years now and after asking loads of questions here, I've got FCRs on the M900, started and idling on the service stand.

Here is where I'm an idiot.

The M900 has JE high-comp pistons, Ignitech and Dyna coils.  With the FCRs, that's the extent of the engine mods.

So after tweaking the airbox, getting the intake boots in place and fuel into the carbs, the bike starts and idles smoothly.  I can leave the bike idle without babysitting the throttle, which is already more than I could say about the CVs.

Where I'm not sure is how much to snug up the throttle cables now that they're connecting the grip to the pulley.  They rotate about 2mm now, which seems good to me.

The second question is how much tweaking do the carbs need?  The bike idles well, but slowly coming up through the rev range shows some hesitation, if I roll off slightly the engine sounds better, and settles back to idle.

I pulled the front plug, which looks wet.  (It was blackish before).  The FCRs are 'set' as they were sent from Chris, so it's a baseline of sorts.

So I know there are two variables here.  The ignition (Ignitech) and the FCRs.  I've also heard the FCRs dump fuel into the intakes quick, so big throttle changes could choke it.

Any pointers?  I know this is the testing / tuning part, but any information would be welcome.

spark plug should not be wet.
check for spark.
got two sets of fcr's from ca-cycleworks and ran
well out of the box.

Have a good read of Patrick Burns Keihin Tuning Guide. There's a link through Chris Kelley's site. A great crash course in carb tuning.

Running stock or open air box?
How long have you had the Igniteck and JEs, and how  was it running with them?
Have you set a map for the Igniteck or running the canned map?
What is the jetting baseline as delivered?
What is the temp where you are?
Does the bike start easily with no squirts of the accelerator pump, or does it take a few squirts?

You will love these carbs once they are tuned. They will tie your mods together and complete the package.

I'll have to give that a good read.

To your questions:

Open air box / K&N filter
The JEs I've had for some time, but ran them with the CV carbs and the Kokusan modules. (which ran well, but recently had issue with holding steady idle once warm and on the road)
Ignitech has the canned map (so far)
Jetting is 'as delivered'
temp is hovering around 60 deg. F
Bike needs a squirt of the accel. pump, starts than settles to smooth idle

Will take a closer look in the next few days, as I say there are a few variables involved to sort out.   I'll also take you up on your offer via PM.  Let me see what I can on this end as simple diagnostics.

the hesitation, imo, was from needle clip setting.  when i was in dfw, another dfwm'r picked up a set of FCR's for his SS900 and noted the same needle clip adjustment was necessary
