Hi Monster gurus.... A quick question (as per my usual modus operandi, I've searched the forum, but strangely (??) this time I can't find the answer to my question in previous posts? Thanks to everyone on here, I can usually find technical and other questions very easily on this great forum. Cheers for that to all concerned.
Question is: I bought a DP open airbox / filter for my S2R from commoto.com recently:
http://www.store.commoto.com/ducatistoremonsterintake-ducatimonsterairfilterkit2002-p-257.html (http://www.store.commoto.com/ducatistoremonsterintake-ducatimonsterairfilterkit2002-p-257.html)
(The filter that came with the box doesn't look the same as the one in the pic above - it's green, for starters...?)
I don't know what brand the filter is - I THOUGHT it was going to be a BMC filter - the filter itself just has a Ducati logo on it, which would suggest it could be from any manufacturer..? I'm sure it'll do fine (??) - especially as I've already paid for it! Commonwealth Motorcycles couldn't tell me any more when I emailed them. There are no instructions or maintenance documentation with the filter. Can anyone tell me:
1. do I need to OIL this filter before starting to use it?
2. If so, how often and what with? What's the best oil to use?
3. Do I just leave it DRY?
4. How often, and HOW do I clean it when required?
5. Do I need to worry about RAIN?
- Just as a footnote, I'm installing a new ceramic-coated Marving cat eliminator mid-pipe and freshly cored stock exhaust (they look like they're going to be GREAT - a mate did a really classy job of coring them for me) in the next couple days - hence the open air box to go with all that...(and an ECU remap / dyno to follow, of course).
Oops, sorry - another question: The Marving mid-pipe has will accommodate the lambda / O2 sensor. Do I ignore that and disconnect the sensor regardless, prior to the ECU remap - or do I leave the sensor in the system....??
Any tips about the filter would be gladly recieved. It's all 'new territory' to me....Cheers, Tim
Tim I cannot tell from the image if your filter is cloth or paper, if it is cloth yes you need to oil it , from what I understand it is the oil which captures particles as they are drawn through the medium.
What I use is a K & N recharge kit available at AutoOne for under twenty paseos , kit comes with a cleaning agent ,instructions and oil . Spray away.
Your other question should be addressed to the brains trust in "tech" on the main board , plenty of smart
people in their .
Dez
To tell if it's a oil type filter, it should have a fine mesh over the membrane. This supports the filter.
The standard paper filter does not have this (a least mine didn't)
I'd bet it would be an oil type.
The K&N recharge kit is the way to go
+1 on the K/N Recharge kit on sale at Autobahn for $15 atm
Just follow the instructions on the box. ;)
I have a DP air filter and mine is yellow in colour or used to be [roll]
And as Vossy said has a mesh fly screen type thingy supporting it so it dosn't get sucked in the intake :D

WOW $114US! Mine was cut at the dealers for $0. Maybe I should start buying some standard tops and cutting them! What was the finish like? Does it look cut or professionally molded?
Mmmmmmm! The SUCKING bellow coming from under the tank is very noice!! [thumbsup]
Plays havoc with yer fuel consumption though! (Lotsa right hand work I mean [roll] [Dolph] )
Hey, thanks all you guys.
@Dez and Rob S: YES, I'm certain it's a cloth filter - and the K&N kit sounds like the go. That's what I'll do. And if it ever needs replacing I'll replace it with a K&N filter, I'd say. I'll try the tech board for an answer on the O2 sensor too...And Rob - Thanks for the heads-up on the Autobahn special - I'll defo do that.
@Mr S2R: I know - it sounds/is outrageous - but it DOES include the filter (about $60?) - it hasn't been cut with a hacksaw (about my best other option! :P ) - and I expedited freight by including it with some other bits I had to order...
BTW, it looks great - It is a factory 'ducati' piece. (I like everything as schmicko as I can get it! :D )
Commoto described it as a "Ducati race fliter" when I emailed them...that'll do it! [laugh]

I can't wait for that! [beer]
Bugger! [roll]
Should add, the filters usualy come pre oiled.
i would clean it at 10,000klm max, less in dusty conditions.
As for rain try not to ride in it [roll], but i don't think a little rain is a big issue ;)

haha all cool dude! As long as you are happy that is all that matters! The bike is an extension of you after all! ;D I myself am considering getting rid of my "hack" air box and going for these instead:

I have seen them on special elsewhere! [cheeky]
Yeah, I considered the 'pod' option at the time - then I got tired of 'considering' and decided I wanted to just get on with it. Look forward to hearing how they work out for you! [thumbsup]

Yeah Rob - I can't tell if this filter is 'pre-oiled' or not? Seems ridiculous they deliver a product with absolutely NO info whatsoever....but I guess the idea is you buy it from a "dealer" and the dealer gives you the lowdown... OR you buy online and get the info from OZ Monster forum, right? [thumbsup]
Cheers.

yeah my K&N was pre oiled - not sure about BMC but one would assume.
As for rain - yeah I rode to the Island last year - miserable bloody Vic weather. Whilst the bike was sitting I lifted the tank and put a shopping bag over the opening during PI's "light showers"....
...however whilst washing the bike I am careful not to squirt water in, around, or under the tank whilst cleaning it. I am not as meticulous as some people though.
Oh yeah found that cheaper price for the pods:

I've ridden with a chopped airbox lid for years and never had a problem even when riding long distances in rain. Don't stress about it !

agree... monsters are best ridden without stress or over thought, just ridden...
I've got pods and previously had the dp open box, I've ridden in torrential rain without dramas, and i wash my bike with a fire hose. quite literally!!
Cheers. Can confirm it IS a cloth air filter with with "webbing". Got the oil/cleaning kit from Autobarn for $14.99 (reduced from $24.99) yesterday. Will give it an oil regardless, because i can't be sure if it's pre-oiled or not. All good. Thanks.
over oiling was the cause of many problems on the commodores when everyone started using this kind of filter. the excess oil was making a mess of the air flow sensors and thus effecting the tunes negatively. some also claimed over oiling the cloth was worse than a std filter.
if i was you and going to oil it i would clean it first just to be on the safe side.

Will definitely tread carefully based on that....cheers.
Ok - just for anybody who's reading this later and may be in a similar position - Commonwealth Motorcycles have now confirmed that the filter in question does come PRE-OILED. (It's going in today)...cheers.

Dam Mr s2r why did you post that link. >:(
Thats a saving to good to refuse ;)
Looks like an early Christmas present on the way ;D
Rob dont think they come in GOLD [cheeky]
It's usually a good idea to, at the very least, have someone check your A/F ratios after doing any sort of intake work. An increase of air without an increase in fueling may have you running a little lean. :-[
