Its basically winter and time to bring the bike inside and have some non-riding fun.
Its pitiful how LITTLE info there is out there on doing Valve Adjustments on the monster 696, especially when considering how many of them sold in the last 3 years! When you google 696... there's NOTHING!
This is where YOU come in!
PLEASE share with me links, pictures, videos, how-to-guides, special tools, advice, and any other valuable info on doing the Valve Adjustment on the 696 (without bringing it to a dealer).
I will try to SHARE this info across multiple boards with as many fellow ducatisti as I can.
*NOTE* I'm not interested in nay-sayers discouraging others on doing their own maintenance... I'm also NOT looking for Valve Adjustment info on: the M600, M750, M900, M400, M600, S4R, S4RS, S2R 800, S2R 1000, Monster 695, 620, 796, or 1100s. Did I miss any? (that was a rhetorical question)
*Moderators please keep this post in the most visible section of the forum (respectively), thanks.
Well I think there is less info mainly because you can't reset the newer generation service light on your own like you could previous generations. Other than that, no ideas, sorry.
umm... from what i understand, the valve adjustment procedure is pretty much the same across all the 2v ducs. you should really read up the tech section of the forum... lots and lots of threads there covering everything you posted here.
sometimes you have to do a little more work searching on your own instead of just parsing through the first page of google.
hackers2r thanks for the input... it does suck about the maintenance light.

Noob, you're not gonna make any friends around here starting out like that [roll].
This place is very welcoming of newcomers. There's lots of great advice and help available from the many knowledgeable members here.
thought made the entirely reasonable suggestion that going to the moderate effort of taking a look around might be something useful for you to consider.
Try the search function, if you show willing to help yourself others will be more inclined to assist.

Also u can download the actual maintenance manual to assist
We use the search function because there is such a depth of knowledge on the site that repeating everything would suck
Btw thought is one of the most helpful
Can I hijack this thread yet? ...........seems like its shot to shit already [cheeky]
One last attempt at help and then it's all your RAT.
My own thread in the Tech section is geared more towards my own S4 however, there may be some helpful information there. Get the LT Snyder handbook from Desmo Times. It's a big help.
Here is the link from my thread... http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=53569.0 (http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=53569.0)
Take it away RAT [thumbsup]
It is a shame that all of CCEMN1's threads are locked....I think a revival would be fun ;D
i have a 2009 696 and all i can say this is a very easy job to do well for me it was but i have been working on cars and bikes for more then 30 years if you need to ask how to do this and you dont do much work on any bikes then give to some one that know what they our doing in the long run it will save you lots of money
people this thread has been killed,
thanks for everyone's input.
I shouldn't have pointed out that the guy didn't have friends... I'm sorry thought.
Should have been in Tech to begin with, we'll give it a shot.

Look on the bright side 8). This thread was always gonna be superfluous given that pretty much all of its subject aspirations have already been met in other pre-existing threads. Your goal had been acheived before it began [clap].
If there's ever anything you wanna know, we're all friends here. Just ask [thumbsup].

Whereas the smart-arse assertion in that pseudo apology needs no pointing out.
Oops... I pointed it out anyway. I'm sorry :-*.
the sad thing is... out of all the other duc forums he's spammed this in... he's gotten the most help here and been the least grateful. [bang]

and i looked him up after you mentioned him... wow. haha, pretty impressive trolling.
ok party poopers, I'm back!
Read 627 times and still no valuable input, great forum here, thanks for all the help guys!
So back to business...
Finally got around to adjusting my valves!
Finished mine a few weeks ago, here's my .02,
I didn't do mine at the exact service interval mileage (it was a little past).
Valves were WAY too tight. definitely needed adjustment (not just a check/inspection)
(going from memory here) but I think all 4 valves (opening clearance) were less than .05/1000 inch.
New shims not needed, wet sanded them down to around 4/1000 inch of clearance.
Closing clearance was ok.
Gas tank is a pain in the a$$, really thinking about some kind of quick disconnect for the hoses so I can just take it off and set it aside.
Feeler gauges a must, micrometer helps, TDC is kind of confusing at first. Used needle nose pliers to pull out the little "clip" that holds the rocker arm in place.
Must remove the battery. Also must remove the little wind cowl that covers the horizontal cylinder.
Found a few youtube videos that offered some general advice.
*Most interesting part of all, the 696 has NO VALVE COVER GASKETS!!! I bet you didn't know that!
It freaked me out at first because I've never heard anyone talk about this!
Took me about 2 days of "tinkering" after work for a few hours to finish everything. First day to get the gas tank and everything else out of the way, second day to wet sand and double/triple check everything.
Maybe its psychological, but the bike feels like it has more power/torque.
Did I miss anything?
Which douchebag wants to say something smart?
How is the detailed how-to video coming along? Post a link to it when you are done, it is hard to find complete info on this. [beer]
Patrick
I'll be that douchebag..

Your tank already has quick disconnects.. You weren't smart enough to find them.

I bet that almost everyone knows there is a huge o-ring on the valve covers that serve as a gasket. And has for some time.
musicboy is all done.
