Title: The Mercenary Monster
Post by: brownwhale on June 21, 2008, 09:33:02 AM
I ended up accidentally hijacking a thread about headlights and there seemed to be some interest in her so here you go:

(http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s51/pbrownw/102_9147.jpg)

I'll try to remember all the mods:

Tail chop, fender eliminator, rear wheel painted black w/ red stripe, hugger reshaped, stock cans chopped cored and wrapped in black header wrap, seat recovered, bellypan, clutch: billet basket, pressure plate, caps, springs, cover.  opened belt covers, stomp grips, side mount damper, monstrous pods, jet kit, MPL clutch slave, billet alt cover, performance plug wires, clipons, radial brake master, remote style clutch master, rizoma reservoirs, bar end mirror, '06 R6 front end: 5 way adjustable forks (high and low speed compression), radial mounted monoblock calipers, stainless brake lines, R6 fender, wheel(stock black w/red stripe), Super Duke headlight, custom sprocket cover, 130 db horn, tons of wiring cleanup/hiding, side covers, fairing and seat cowl all removed, everything painted flat black with silver decals, raised tail, dropped front, all emissions/rebreather etc removed

probably missing something

here's how it looked when I bought it less than a year ago, also ALL work has beed done by me, no one else has touched the bike

thanks for looking

Did you lower the front that much or are the R6 forks that much longer?  Nice look!  How do you like brake/clutch masters....are they off a 999?

And how much work was it to get the forks to fit (say compared to the more common GSX-R swap)?

Next mod should be powdercoating the frame/swingarm black. It makes a drastic, beastly change from the gold paint. I'm glad I did mine that way.

Mine is in "super-wet black". Did my frame/hoop/swingarm/wheels & triples in it.

I've been diggin on your Superduke headlight since you posted on the old board long ago.  Been watching eBay but that is a very rare find apparently.  I'm gonna have to the local KTM dealer and find out what the cost of a new unit would be (ouch!).  Did you modify the headlight in any way to mount it or just bend up those brackets and bolt it on?  Very nicely done.

Answers to your questions:

The R6 forks are a little longer than stock but I also dropped the height for better turn in, so its a combo effect

The clutch master cylinder is off some ducati I forget which, I just didn't want the coffin stye, together with the MPL slave its very easy to pull compared to most bikes, the brake master is a stock R6 which is actually a brembo radial mount, this piece is amazing, ridiculous feel, adjustability and plain ol' stopping power, I one finger brake now and still outbrake my riding buddies

I'm not familiar with the gsxr front end swap, and I used an entire front end (wheel/fender/brakes etc) so fitment wasn't too bad, I originally tried to use the R6 triples as well but they made steering difficult, I had to shim the lower triple to get a good clamp on the forks but otherwise no problem

The Super duke headlight has a couple mounting tabs on it, I simply held the light where I wanted and bent pieces of bar stock to make brackets that would bolt to those tabs and various mounting spot on the triples

I just called the local KTM dealer $204.99. Not too bad.

It came with the wiring, I spliced it into the stock headlight harness so it uses the correct connector to plug into the main harness, pretty simple as it's the same setup, one main bulb and a small parking bulb

finally pulled this one off myself.  credit brownwhale with the idea.  made my own brackets and may fab up a cowl sometime in the future.  this headlight is sooooo much brighter than the stock headlight and was pretty much a straight across wiring job, although I took the time to invent a new solderless method of connecting the wires  (http://ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=10135.0) as I couldn't find my flux and was too lazy to solder mostly because I suck at it.

keep your eyes on eBay for the SuperDuke headlight, maybe you'll have better luck than me.  I couldn't wait longer than the several months I looked so broke down and bought one from the dealer at something like $230 (OUUUCH!).  It really is much, much brighter than the Ducati light though.  I thought I had got the wiring crossed on the low beam/high beam until I switched to high and shazaaam!  I was seeing spots for a few moments.  :)

just noticed this... I can take some pics later tonight at home but all I did was bend up some joist strapping brackets, trimmed up the ends with aviation shears (tin snips) and then smoothed out the cut edges with a bit of sandpaper.  Black rattle canned them after a layer or two of primer and voila!  It was pretty simple once I got the bends correct for the top brackets.  2 top/ 2 bottom, some rubber grommet thingies, some washers, some nut/bolts.  Holds on like a rock and doesn't jiggle at all.

I don't know how I missed this thread.  I really like the look of that Superduke headlight.  I'm on my way back stateside to spend a couple weeks at home and plan to have my MT-01 headlight installed this week.  I'll post some pix as soon as I get a chance.

Why not also have a R6 rear wheel?
You`ll loose over 5 pounds and it can be done, I`ve dunnit.
W an alu sprocket & wavy disc, I´ve lost 2,5 kg.

Wiring schema before I lose the notes I made:

Ducati  -->  KTM
Black  -->  Brown
Yellow  -->  White
White  -->  Green
Yellow/Black  -->  Blue

I found this really helpful, thanks for posting.  Also, when I got my Superduke light it was wired up with a 6 pin Molex terminal housing.  I ordered new parts from Allied Electronics.  It's the .093 size, not .062.  Below is a link to the parts page where the housings and clips part numbers can be found should anyone want to go the route I have.
