Title: Thinking about saddlebags
Post by: lawmaster891 on December 04, 2011, 08:09:50 PM
I will be starting school again in january and I am thinking of getting some saddlebags for my 98 monster 900. What are some good ones for a decent price? I like the look of hardbags or something like the ogio stealth. It would be nice if they could lock, fit my helmet in them so i dont have to carry it, and be waterproof.

dont know that much about saddlebags, but it sounds more like you want a top case rather than saddle bags.  most top cases can fit in a full face helmet, are lockable, and are waterproof.  and a top case wont interfere with lane splitting if you need to do it at all.

I rigged a 37L top Givi top case to a rashed up seat cowl I bought here.
It fits a backpack with laptop and lunch and rain suit, or helmet while at work.
Despite some trepidation here on sturdiness it held up fine thru the year.
Looks a little like ass but damn is it nice toting my shit around and having a little lockable storage.

Top cases are awesome -- I use them a  lot on an assortment of bikes.  Even on my buell which has all three hard cases I only use the top case ~95% of the time.  Its just handy to be able to tote stuff in a dry, secure manner without making the bike any wider.

I'd also be nervous about the sturdyness of mounting a top case to the rear seat cowl, but if it works, its a nice forward location which is good for weight and wind.

If you are going to transport stuff to and from school. Hardcase with lock is good to go. or just bring a good bookbag.

why? because people steal shit. you can throw your gym clothes in a bag and lock it in there, it wont get wet if it rains, and for the summer time u can dump your helmet and ur jacket into it.

helmet easy, Helmet & jacket not so sure. I've fit Helmet & textile pants. 37L, bigger would be
better for gear.

I received my mount in the mail today. It is a nonfango mount I found new on ebay. Now I just need to buy my topcase.

It is a shame they don't have this for the older Monsters http://www.twistedthrottle.com/trade/productview/6232/817/ (http://www.twistedthrottle.com/trade/productview/6232/817/) - Gene

We do not use the top case, but we have the sidebags from the Ducati Performance Catalog (Mandarina Duck for Ducati) on a Monster.  They are attractive leather.  I think they have been discontinued by Mandarina Duck, but I know that Allesandro at Victory SnC in Bologna still has a few sets. You cannot fit your helmet in though, and I am not sure if they are waterproof - but they do look very nice, and they hold items as big as say, a wine bottle, very easily. Beware, they are not inexpensive!  Below are pictures of the bags and as installed on a Monster City press photo.
