I've been riding the Monster (2000 M900 ie with Ohlins rear shock) after its rebirth quite a bit. While in the desert last week while observing the speed limit (on the autobahn) I hit a particularly hard bump and the rear wheel ate the license plate and the axle moved. Needless to say it was quite interesting for a few moments. I did some roadside repairs and made it home. The previous owner saw the bike yesterday and commented the rear looked awfully low. Sure enough, I measured the seat height at 28-3/4 inches. I obviously did something wrong when I took it apart and re-assembled it, Is the linkage in correctly?(http://i740.photobucket.com/albums/xx49/evandewan/IMG_3574.jpg)
How about the - hoop adjusters?(http://i740.photobucket.com/albums/xx49/evandewan/IMG_3571.jpg)
Here is a picture of the shock(http://i740.photobucket.com/albums/xx49/evandewan/IMG_3573.jpg) and finally here is a picture of the bike prior to its crash and another as it sits now, notice the space between the rear wheel and the underside of the frame (http://i740.photobucket.com/albums/xx49/evandewan/GetAttachmentaspx.jpg) (http://i740.photobucket.com/albums/xx49/evandewan/IMG_3572.jpg)
Where do I start (i.e, take it apart and start over?)?
Can you back up and take a 'complete bike' pic like the 'before' pic you have?
It does look low.
(http://i740.photobucket.com/albums/xx49/evandewan/IMG_3435.jpg)(http://i740.photobucket.com/albums/xx49/evandewan/IMG_3435.jpg) Here are a couple I've taken prior to becoming "wrench-happy".... I've been tightening down on the spring, which has brought the back end up. What I think I should do is start at the beginning and remove the shock and set it for the correct length (I saw 337mm in another post). I'll then reinstall the shock and go through the Ohlins adjustment guide...is that a reasonable approach?
Adjusting the spring won't change the shock length, it should be fully extended with no weight on it and only slightly compressed with the bikes weight on it.
I looked at my bike which has the same suspension and an Ohlins shock to see if it is possible to flip a part like the rocker arm and unintentionally lower the suspension. I can't see any way to do that and yous suspension looks just like mine except for being so low. Maybe you have a shock that fits, but is the wrong length?
This is what should be on your bike:

Well, I joined Dip-shits anonymous last night " Hi, my name is Evan and I'm a Dip-shit.......
Turns out there was NO pre-load on the spring. I took teh shock apart to paint the spring and when I put it back together, I didn't adjust the load on the spring. Now, I've adjusted everything according to the Ohlins guide and the seat now sets 30.5" AGL (above ground level). I set the compression and rebound damping to the standard settings in M.O.M (Monster Owners Manual). I haven't taken it for a spin yet, but the rear end height looks mo betta.
Now, anyone know the correct measurements (sag, loaded, unloaded) for the front Showa forks?
OBTW, thanks for everyone who helped on this one, but you can't fix dip-shit ???
Hey, you figured it out so i don't think you qualify for DSA [thumbsup]
