Title: Strange problem while draining carburetors for winter... Post by: Sleeptraffic on December 11, 2011, 12:07:36 PM Ok, so I went to drain the float bowls of gas as usual before storing the bike. When I loosened either bowl the amount of gas that came out was close to a 20oz. bottle of water and rising! This leads me to suspect that I'm having an issue somewhere in the lines between the carbs, the fuel pump, and the fuel cock. Or possibly in the carbs, since it seems like the needle(s) might be stuck open, allowing fuel to pass by.
Has anyone had this happen to them before? Any help assistance or advice appreciated... Title: Re: Strange problem while draining carburetors for winter... Post by: Howie on December 11, 2011, 12:17:33 PM Failed vacuum fuel shut off. Rather common failure. The needles are doing what they are supposed to, allowing fuel into the float bowl in as the level drops. The best fix is a good ol' fashioned manual petcock.
IMO, full tank with Stable or equal is better for storage. Title: Re: Strange problem while draining carburetors for winter... Post by: Sleeptraffic on December 11, 2011, 01:03:14 PM I never did like that setup...Thanks howie. Full tank and Sta-bil all set.
BYW, other than the motion-pro are there any other aftermarket petcocks available for a monster? Title: Re: Strange problem while draining carburetors for winter... Post by: BG DUKE on December 12, 2011, 03:08:06 AM Hi!
Last winter i had the same issue with my bike: http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=44982.0 (http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=44982.0) I took out the vacuum fuel tap, then checked it's functionality and it works fine. Maybe the valve in it was stuck somehow. In the spring I reinstalled it in the fuel system and didn't have any problems with it anymore. For this winter I decided to not drain the carbs.
