Title: Monster 1100 EVO maintainance
Post by: HotIce on December 18, 2011, 11:58:37 AM
First thing I noticed, in order to remove the oil screen, you need to pull the pipe. Is there an easy button for that?  :)
Also, AFAICS, there is no way I can pull the vertical cylinder belt cover out, w/out pulling or lifting the tank.
Any hints?
Without service manual at hands (I looked for it, even asked Ducati dealers, no luck) I am kind of blind ...

You have 15K on the bike already?!  ;) Not something you need to consider at every oil change. The oil filter is for that. I've never found more than a couple of tiny slivers of metal in any of mine. They aren't going anywhere either. If you pull yours, I doubt you'll find more. Waste of time so early IMO.

15K? I wish  ;D
I just want to prepare ahead. They do suggest to pull the oil screen at the 1st oil change, IIRC.
Also, have you been able to get the vertical belt cover out w/out major surgery?

Clean the engine oil pick up filter at 26,000 km / 22,500 miles according to my 796 book. Look again! Oil filter change every 7,500 miles of course. Same with oil. No issue if it's the best synthetic 15W50. (My dealer uses Redline because it never let him down during his racing career.) Change it every 3,000 - 4,000 if that makes you feel better. Engines are scary clean though compared to the 70's - 80's.

Too old to bother changing my own belts.  ;) My dealer can do that when he checks the valve clearances the first time or 2 years. After that, maybe every three. With these Kevlar belts I'm less concerned with the 2 year suggestion. Only changed them on my old bikes when they started to throw black dust. Maybe I was lucky...

In order to remove the vertical belt cover, yes you have to move the fuel tank aside.

Its a nuisance.  But really, its not the major huge pain in the arse often reported.

Remove the billion bolts holding the tank skins on, then there's one bolt securing the fuel tank at its rear underside and just one more on either the left or right locating pin.  You dont need to completely remove the tank from the bike, the fuel lines can stay connected, just carefully lift it up and move it slightly to the left while you get the belt cover up and out.

Move your exhaust to get the pick up screen out?  Consider yourself well catered for  ;D.

On my M1100 I have to remove the Termi front header pipe to get the oil drain plug out of the bottom of the sump  [roll] [laugh].

Another small hassle brought about by thoughtless design from the Italians. But every time I ride it, I forgive 'em   ;D.
