Title: M796 cam shaft side cover oil leak?
Post by: ilovemyduc on January 01, 2012, 10:49:26 AM
Noticed this while looking over the bike.  Looks like oil coming from the right most bolt.  Cleaned & more appeared.  Bike is @ 3250 miles.

I have the service manual but I can't figure out if this is something I can just take off and fix real quick.  Dealer or wait till 7500 mile service?

have you tried tightening the bolt?

Nope.  I can do that safely (without messing with cam shaft)?

should be about 10nm on torque, snug but not overtight.
there's an o ring the shape of that bulge in the middle, if the screw is loose, you just have it leaking from that.

wrenched it to 10Nm, didn't see/feel it move.  went for a short ride, doesn't appear to be more oil.  next long ride we will see.

if it appears again, just get the o ring replaced

I am having a similar problem with my M696. Let me know how your long ride goes.

I had a small oil weep from the same spot on my 696... it stopped right after I nipped the bolts up a little tighter.

Went for another ride yesterday, 15~ miles and tightening may have fixed it.  I have a lot of riding planned for today so I'll let you later today.

Negative, almost 100 miles today and it's still leaking oil.

So, is this something I can pop off and replace the o-ring myself without interfering with camshaft/timing and without removing the tank?  The service manual doesn't address the cam-shaft side covers individually so I think the answer to that is no.

My bike is under warranty but I feel like it will take my dealer forever to do.

Actually just found this:

I wonder if the new o-ring is for the 796 as well.

Yes.

Take the screws out and I believe there are small slots that you can use a small screwdriver to lightly pry off the covers. It's easy.

Wound up taking it to the dealer.  They replaced some o-rings and some other part that I have no idea what it is.  It was not fixed as it began leaking oil again after less than 40 miles.  I brought it back immediately.

They replaced 886.4.140.1A (4 of them), which are rocker shaft o-rings.  Can someone tell me what has to be taken apart to replace those?  Also, 788.1.111.1C - wtf is this?  I can't find it in my service manual.

I was under the impression they would be replacing 886.4.060.2A, which is an o-ring for the side cap.

the part number ending with 111 is a part for the 795 which is a different kind of gasket unless it's a superceded part.
but it seems it would be an altogether different cap.

Still at the dealer.

1) Brought it in when originally discovered.  They replaced rocker-shaft o-rings and that other mysterious part.
2) Brought it back same day, wasn't fixed.  They said they drove it and oil wasn't leaking.  When I picked it up I could see oil but I gave them the benefit of the doubt.
3) Brought it back same day, wasn't fixed.  They made me use the shops flashlight to point out the oil.  Ridiculous since it's very easy to see.  Almost broke out into an argument.  This is where I stand now.  3rd attempt.

Again, can someone tell me what had to come apart to replace the 4 rocker-shaft o-rings described in my previous post?  Also, just called.  They've ordered crush washers from ducati, I assume for the rear-most bolt.  Crush washers seem like they will hide the problem, no?

Go to ducati.com and download the spare parts catalogue for your bike:
http://ducati.com/services/maintenance/index.do (http://ducati.com/services/maintenance/index.do)

Go to drawing 13, for the cylinder heads.

You will see the O-ring/gasket (788.1.111.1C), it's item 11.
Item 12 is that gasket, *and* the side cover that needs to be removed to replace that gasket and the o-rings on the rocker shafts.

The rocker shaft O-rings are item 20 (886.4.140.1A), shown on drawing 14.

Your 796 does not have an O-ring (886.4.060.2A) for the side cap, that's for the earlier configuration and they've changed the design.

The crush washers, item 22 on drawing 13 (852.1.246.1A) are used to seal the interface between the bolt and the cover.
That's where your leak appears to be, so it's very likely the crush washers will stop the leak.

OK, thanks.  Those diagrams/parts are different than the ones in my service manual.  Is it true that nothing had to come apart other than the side cover to change the rocker shaft o-rings?

From pictures, it looks like removing that side cover and pulling the rocker shafts out a little bit is all that's necessary.

But no FHE on doing it.
