Title: Locking truck bed box?
Post by: TAftonomos on January 06, 2012, 04:08:10 PM
Ok....so I've got an older (93) F150 longbed for cycle hauling duty.  The toolbox that is on it now prevents me from closing the bed with a bike in it.... so out it comes.

I'm trying to find a lockable box that will fit inside the bed along the side of it.  Nothing sticking up on top.  Doesn't have to be huge, just a place to hold the tie downs.  I suppose I could just toss them behind the seat, but I try and have everything "in it's place".

Truck is a single cab, otherwise I'd store them inside under the back seat/cargo area.

If the bike is in a Baxley chock with tie downs, no worries about the tailgate being down.

I drove the entire way from Columbus OH to southeastern PA with my bike in the back of an S10. Tailgate was down the entire way. All I had was 4 good ratchet straps and no chock whatsoever. We just compressed the suspension and made sure everything was tidy and off we went. Shitty PA turnpike and all.

  We just compressed the suspension

generally not a good idea for storage or transport to do....

Bike isn't going anywhere, but I would bring a cooler or 2, ezup, misc stuff that I don't want to worry about sliding out the back.

I'll check out the pork chop box.   Even something smaller would be fine.....  can you put a padlock on a 50 cal ammo box?  Maybe there is a small diamond-plate/square box I can just bolt down to the bed..

You could just get a narrower conventional box:

For an 8 hour drive, I see no problem in compressing the suspension to keep the bike from bouncing around

And there was no problem with it

maybe no problem for you this go-round...but there are plenty of good reasons for not doing it, but that is for another thread outside of this one...

you want to compress the suspension a little bit (~1/2" to 3/4") but by compressing your suspension all the way you are going to bust fork seals like nobodies business. your basically bowing out the forks every time you hit the slightest pot hole.

as for the OP, I dont know anything about truck bed toolboxes (that porkchop one looks pretty slick) but I wouldnt worry about the tailgate being down. if the bike is properly tied down its not going to be an issue. just make sure that you tie down points are securely mounted.

I have had several Tuffy boxes. They are excellent. They make them side boxes for the F150

Thanks for the ideas guys.

No point in having to strap down a cooler, tent, extra tires etc if I can just shut the bed...

I think I'm going to just pickup a large ammo box (or something similar), bolt it down to the bed in a corner.  Find a way to lock it, and I'm good to go.   I'd love one of the larger boxes, but it's a 2K truck....so spending 500$ on a box is out :).
