Title: Got a Contour camera
Post by: sumper on January 08, 2012, 08:05:34 PM
Hi Folks.  I know there is another thread on this somewhere but was wondering who else here uses a Contour camera.  The ride down the parkway on Saturday was so beautiful and exhilarating that I wanted to capture it on video, so I went to REI and bought a Contour camera.  I have been experimenting with the settings and mounting styles.  Was curious what software is most popular for editing.  Does anybody use the storyteller App from Contour?  It comes factory set to 700 dpi, the lowest of three resolutions, which looks great on my test rides, would there be any reason to use the highest res (1080).

Hi and welcome to the forum. I've been using a Contour HD since last year, here's the link to my thread http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=52886.0 (http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=52886.0)

App-wise Contour's storyteller is pretty much useless for me, I use iMovie on my mac for editing. As for resolution I do 720 and medium quality. I didn't see that much difference between 720 and 1080 to justify the extra space the files take.

A note on memory cards: if you get cheap ones they will not be able to record fast enough at higher resolutions (eg 720 @ 60fps & med-hi quality) and will break up your video in chunks (separate files about 50-100 MB each) with about 10-15 secs of video missing between them. Also there seems to be a 4GB limit on files, so once you hit it the recording will continue in another file.

I just read the mentioned thread and I've just been convinced of the value of having a cam. It also eliminates the "he said she said" in a worse case scenario.

Thanks for the input.  The review was helpful, especially in addressing the problems with the quicktime files.  I have not yet been able to watch a clip without it pausing every four seconds to buffer.  I guess I will need to buy a faster computer, even though my computer is not slow.  I will post some videos once I get them uploaded.  I am going to jump onto the original thread to follow up.
