Who's getting one? Me again. :P Who has one already? Not me, I waited for 3G. Is it worth it? I don't care, it's pretty and I need an update. [roll] [roll] ;D July 11th! ;D Title: Re: iPhone. Post by: 748s on June 22, 2008, 04:27:35 PM Who wants one? Me. Who's getting one? Probably, if unlocked versions are available or what sort of contracts you have to sign up to. Who has one already? nah! waitin' for 3G. Is it worth it? Probably, once again depends on V2.0 of the software and what app's are available at the iPhone store. (Need a PDF reader) Title: Re: iPhone. Who's getting one? Yeah most likely, depends on contract Who has one already? Not me, I waited for 3G. Is it worth it? But of course, it's an Apple product...... I'll wait till later in the year [thumbsup] Title: Re: iPhone. Post by: Super T.I.B on June 22, 2008, 04:42:13 PM Is it worth it? But of course, it's an Apple product...... Is there such a big diff between 8 and 16 gig. I know, about 8 gig difference. [roll] What won't the 8 gig do that the 16 gig will? Title: Re: iPhone. Post by: mattyvas on June 22, 2008, 04:49:55 PM As far as i've read it's just storage space that's it.
the prices are US, here it is likely to be $250-ish 8gig and $400 for 16gig. Somewhere on par with US prices plus our usual import taxes etc... I am sure it will be on a 24 month contract with either provider Optus/Vodafone. We'll when July 11th comes around. Title: Re: iPhone. Post by: bigiain on June 22, 2008, 06:50:36 PM Who wants one? Who's getting one? Me again. Who has one already? Me. And I'm gonna upgrade it to the 3G. Is it worth it? Yes. I don't regret a cent of what I paid for my 2.5G one last year even knowing I'm gonna be upgrading it 9 months later. July 11th! Maybe, I'm still waiting to see what plans the local carriers offer, and whether it's worth me waiting til I'm in the states in Aug to get one there and unlock it myself. big Title: Re: iPhone. Post by: bigiain on June 22, 2008, 06:57:32 PM What won't the 8 gig do that the 16 gig will? Like Matty says, it's _only_ storage space - the extra 8 gig will let you keep ~1500 - 2000 extra songs in it, or something like 25 extra full length movies (compressed specially for the iPhone a 90-120 min movie comes out at ~350Meg). big Title: Re: iPhone. I've got a few bits of video on my iPhone, but I don't watch TV at home, why would I want to watch it on my phone? ;) Quote So, Big, what has got you hooked on this phone? Why is it "better" than other phones, except for the movies and songs bit. It's the only actual working web browser on a phone I've ever used. It's got great email support (though it took a little tweaking to make it work well with my mail setup). As alpha geek here at work an ssh client in my pocket has been _very_ useful for off-site disaster repair. Other than that, it just "works right" - I didn't think I wanted googlemaps on my phone, but _geez_ that's been useful a few times! I don't like reading books on tiny screens, but the few eBooks I've downloaded have come in very handy while waiting for people in cafes or pubs. Quote I was going to get an iplod but I think I will wait for the phone. Kill two birds, as they say. ;) Yeah, it very much does. I used to use my 60gig iPod pretty much every day, my iPhone has pretty much taken over - I need to manage my music collection a bit more on the 8gig iPhone, but it spends most of its days on my desk at work docked to the computer charging, so it's no big deal to move albums and playlists on and off it every now and then, and hell, it's almost twice as big as my original 5gig iPod, and I happily survived with only the ~100 albums it would store as my "carry around collection"... I don't think the iPhone is anything like as "revolutionary" as Steve Jobs would like people to think, Blackberry has done mobile email well for years, Windows Mobile phones do a _reasonable_ job of web browsing, the iPod was certainly not the first mp3 walkman replacement, but when you compare the iPhones non-phone functionality with anything else, Apple got everything integrated _so_ much better than anybody else - it really does "just work" for nearly everything. (Note, I'm not trying to say the iPhone is perfect, it's certanly got a few minor niggles that annoy me, not so much 'cause they're serious problems, but mainly issues where I can imagine apple having done something in a way that'd make it work better for me - the lack of copy and paste in email frustrates me, as does the lack of block-select-to-delete, but both of those issues require some serious thought into how to make them work "properly" with the touch screen interface, and Apple are realy good about not having half-arsed "solutions" to hard problems, which is why I suspect those things have been "left out" for now.) should-be-working-big Title: Re: iPhone. Yeah, I'm waiting to see the price differences and contract arrangements - $375 or $475 on a cancelled contract from San Francisco is still likely to be cheaper than a local one bought outright (and there's still a possibility that the rumours saying you'll need to enter the contract to get the phone _may_ just be rumours). I still want to see if any of the local telcos are going to offer particularly good voice/data plans, that may push my decision in their favour (I'm pretty happy with my two separate voice and data plans from voda right now, if they'll roll something like them together as an iPhone plan at a good price it'd be very tempting). I'm also sounding out the possibility of getting work to get me one, which'll mean the pricing issue becomes moot ;-) big Title: Re: iPhone. At the Apple store which had the only stock of phones left!!, they had all three carriers connecting, the Telstra line had NO ONE waiting, the Vodafone had maybe 10, and the Optus line started upstairs, then down to ground floor, and went all the way around the inside wall of the shop then continued out the door, ;D I love it when those Telstra pricks get a rocket, its a shame our country cousins get stung by them when there is no alternative. On another note, i had to upgrade my iTunes and OS to talk with the phone, and only have a small bandwidth at home. So I rang Apple, they told me to come into the store, use their free wi-fi, download all the software i need, I know the software is all free, but its not free to actually download it at home, so i think just good service. I also had a couple of great people helping me work everything out on the laptop, they didn't have to, again just good service. [thumbsup] Title: Re: iPhone. Post by: bigiain on July 13, 2008, 05:35:09 PM Matty, had to go with with Optus, only choice when you look at the plans. reasonable data and call caps, all for a reasonable price. That's at least partly because Vodafone's marketing people either completely don't understand the iPhone and it's internet capabilities, or because they're morons. I connected to the cheapest Voda plan, $69/month gets me 250MB of data, 100 free texts, and "$310 of credit". Now 250MB of data isn't enough. _But_, what's _really_ hard to discover from all Voda's promotional material is that excess data is charged at 12c per meg, and it comes off "under the cap", so that $310 of credit represents over 2.5Gig of excess data[1]. Even when I factor in my (low) talk time usage of ~$30/month, that means I can still use 2.3G of excess data plus the 250Meg included without paying any extra. _That_ is, I think, enough... big [1] http://www.vodafone.com.au/personal/plans/termsandconditions/index.htm Title: Re: iPhone. Post by: ace70 on July 13, 2008, 06:36:55 PM Hey Big, Agree with what you have to say about the marketing guys, Telcos in general here are still in the 90's as regard data enabled phones
Do you go through a large amount of data on your first gen? I found out the iPhone seeks out wi-fi networks first before it goes onto 3G or 2G, I have Wi-fi at home and work and the optus Wi-fi in the city, oh and the countless open Wi-fi accounts just walking down the street ;D, and i determined i wouldn't be using a huge amount of data on 3G. The Voda deal sounds good, you must be good at finding the needle in a haystack, because i couldn't find the data costs coming out of the cap in the fine print. I went onto 12 month deal with optus and wanted a slightly cheaper monthly spend which Optus had, $49 250MB and $300 of calls Title: Re: iPhone. SignalScope, expensive at 29.99, but for 4 valve owners who do their own servicing, might be able to do the job of checking frequency for belt tensioning. Cheaper than other equivalent equipment, just a thought Richie Title: Re: iPhone. And then coffee at Mecca. :D :D :D Some good Apps for the iPhone, but a lot of crap as well, here's one that might be good for us Desmo owners SignalScope, expensive at 29.99, but for 4 valve owners who do their own servicing, might be able to do the job of checking frequency for belt tensioning. Post by: ace70 on July 24, 2008, 07:42:16 PM I remember reading of a method of tensioning belts on 4 valve engines.
It used a tool to measure the frequency produced by the belt when it is "plucked". Depending what frequency the belt spat out, you would tension or loosen as required. I think you could also use this on 2 valves, just a different frequency required This little app might be able to give you the tools to conduct this Anyone else seen this method? Title: Re: iPhone. Post by: Super T.I.B on September 04, 2008, 01:32:09 PM My intial plan was to get the iPhone, but after weighing it all up and hearing that the phone needs recharging after a day and all the hoopla about it, the pricing and how hard it is to get one, I've decided against getting one and instead getting a Nokia N95 8gig.
5meg camera, 8 gig of music/vids, gps and other stuff that I can't remember. That's all I want. [thumbsup] Title: Re: iPhone. Post by: mattyvas on September 04, 2008, 03:39:42 PM I walked into the Mac store with no appointment, waited 30 mins (cafe time) and got hooked up.
No ordering of the phone and waiting for days/weeks for it to arrive. I got the iphone cause it links perfectly with my system at home, not only email/music (already have an ipod that i hardly use) But most important for me my calendar transfers and that is #1 for me, no other phone on the market works seamlessly in a Mac system. Nokia transfers some functions but not all. Best of all if I have any trouble with any part of my iphone I can make an appointment and see someone at the Mac store to have any issue addresses and solved. Haven't heard of any other provider/retailer doing that. The Nokia centre near me is just for repairs no-one there is interested in helping you with problems and we tried when the GLW got a new Nokia it went back 3 times until it was replaced each time it was take a number get served and say bye bye. I never mind paying a little extra when great service is attached. Title: Re: iPhone. Post by: melvin on September 04, 2008, 03:45:24 PM decided ..... getting a Nokia N95 8gig ..... iPhone is hot and in its own way good but this nokia is the ants-pants in a mobile phone world ............ but wait ........... N96 is being released ........ soon (august is tipped as the date) ;D dual-band 3G/HSDPA GPS with A-GPS support WLAN WI-FI 5meg ZEISS lens CAMERA AND .............
