Title: Desmo Watch Post by: Jimmy Ducati on January 15, 2012, 01:46:41 PM If it weren't so tiny I would have bought this. The ETA movement it uses is pretty much the industry standard for an auto, but 36mm x 42mm is too small for my watch tastes. That is about the size of an old school timex lets say. It is pretty sporty.

I am in the market for a new watch so I just ordered one. It's a little small so it will go well with my small p*&^$ (I mean wrist).
Title: Re: Desmo Watch Post by: muskrat on January 15, 2012, 06:07:46 PM very expensive for what you get......a rubber strap? how about carbon [laugh]
Title: Re: Desmo Watch Post by: Bishamon on January 16, 2012, 08:43:36 AM One just sold on eBay for $201.00. I was tempted ($200 is a great price for an ETA auto with sapphire crystal), but I have enough watches.
Title: Re: Desmo Watch Post by: mickyvee on January 16, 2012, 10:41:50 AM :( I've had 2 watches which used ETA movements, and they both developed faults. My Omega went back to the shop twice. My TAG packed up altogether. Needless to say, I now have a Rolex, which, after 5 years, is totally reliable.
Title: Re: Desmo Watch Post by: Cloner on January 16, 2012, 10:52:20 AM I'm with you, mickeyvee. My Tag packed in about two months after the warranty expired, and they absolutely refused to stand behind it even though they determined it was a manufacturing defect. They wanted an obscene amount of money for a new movement for it, so I packed the watch in and found another manufacturer to throw money at. I'd rather spend a few grand for a tried-and-true Oyster than a few hundred for another suspect TAG movement.
So much for quality in a name, huh? Title: Re: Desmo Watch Post by: mickyvee on January 16, 2012, 11:06:37 AM i don't understand spending large amounts of money for a watch.... or wearing a watch at all for that matter. doesn't your phone have a clock.... and you always have your phone, right? [/quote No, I don't have a phone. And if I did, I would still wear my watch. If you don't understand why, then I can't explain it to you. Either way, it's no big deal. You're either a watch person, or you aren't. Title: Re: Desmo Watch Post by: Bishamon on January 16, 2012, 11:18:38 AM I think it's a generational thing. I don't always have my phone, but I always wear a watch.
On the other hand, there are young(er) people today who have never worn watch and see no reason to - as Justin said, they always have their phone with them, so why bother. I find it appealing wearing something mechanical on my wrist that serves a purpose - watches are definitely a form of art. I have never had an issue with an ETA movement, though I find their accuracy can vary quite a bit. Then again, I don't wear a mechanical watch for accuracy. Title: Re: Desmo Watch Post by: mickyvee on January 16, 2012, 11:33:14 AM [thumbsup] [thumbsup] My Submariner loses about 10 seconds a week. Plenty accurate enough for an automatic movement, and more than accurate enough for my needs. And yes, a Casio would do the job, but that would be like riding a Honda 175 instead of a Monster 1100 Evo!
Title: Re: Desmo Watch Post by: justinrhenry on January 16, 2012, 11:53:11 AM So you can gauge my generational response better, I'm 35. I wore watches when I was younger, pre-cell phone, but don't anymore. I think watches are more of a fashion accessory than a functional tool. I think everyone here feels the same way. Otherwise this thread wouldn't have so many high $$ watch brands listed. I don't see anyone talking about their swatch watch. [wine]

I think everyone here feels the same way. They are both. They are functional art; wearing a nice mechanical watch is like riding a Ducati. :) Title: Re: Desmo Watch Post by: Curmudgeon on January 16, 2012, 01:39:57 PM :( I've had 2 watches which used ETA movements, and they both developed faults. I've a Valjoux 7750 driving a Sinn 356 UTC DA/SA and it's +/- 2 sec./day for the last 5 years. Otherwise this thread wouldn't have so many high $$ watch brands listed. I don't see anyone talking about their swatch watch. [wine] I'm 27 and wear a watch every day. I have a Seiko Kinetic that I wear to work (including quite a bit of time in the water), and out and about. I also have a Rado that I wear sometimes (but not to work). I've worn watches for years and always check my wrist before I pull out my phone, if I need the time. I love the mechanical aspects of them...I'm not a digital man (except that calculator watch back in the day ;D). That being said, I don't like that watch one bit. Not my style at all. I'm hoping my next watch purchase will be an Omega. Always wanted one. |
