Title: m800 height measurements?
Post by: Roaduser on January 15, 2012, 06:33:01 PM
soo, Ive rebuilt and replaced most all i want on my m800 but didn't take good enough measurements before hand to give me the original heights and geometry...  [bang] it feels great compared to before but i think returning it to base and adjusting from there would be better.

can someone with a m800 or similar age (03) DSS baby monster please take some measurements for me. I'm mainly after the front and rear heights but i have IMA triples and a tail chop. So could someone please take a measurement from floor to say the lowest point of the steering stem tube (not the lower triple) or some other easy point of reference on the front. And similar on the back, say floor to the point above the wheel where the diagonal joins the main bar that runs parallel to the seat. also for reference, the floor to the swingarm bolt?

Thanks in advance for your help!!
Cheers Clint

Do you have the owner's manual?  There are diagrams of some standard-geometry dimensions towards the back.

If not, try starting here by downloading your service manual:

Bike is apart without tank/seat/battery, so your mileage will vary:

Top edge of fork tube (below the cap) to top or IMA upper triple is 11mm

Lower edge of IMA lower triple to the end of polished tube edge is 311mm

Bottom of the horiz beertray tube to the outside diagonal corner edge of the swingarm (next to but before the adjustable endcap) is 490mm.  I know you have a chop, but this should be close.

I hope this gets you in the ballpark.

cheers man, i appreciate your efforts but those front measurements wont help me much  :'(

on the front i have 999 forks so the length of the overall fork, fork tube and the fork cap are different. also the ima triples are a different thickness and profile to the std triples so any measurement involving forks or triple trees wont be usable for me. what i need are chassis to ground measurements with all parts attached.

thanks again for trying tho [beer]

I have IMA Mod 2s with the triple bolts on the bottom clamp.  From the bottom edge of the lower triple to the center of the front axle - 422mm.

What IMA clamps do you have?

18.5" from bottom of steering stem tube (frame) to center of front axle.

19" from center of seat lock to center of chain adjust bolt.

Approximate, as the bikes were on sidestands and preload not necessarily same as yours.

sorry battlecry, didnt realise you had IMA triples too.. i have mod2h4, same lower as yours with the sbk style mod 4 top triple. you may even have that same top!?!? Thanks again for the new measurements, ill have a look at it tonight and see how far off i may be.

I put on a little extra rear preload for my christmas ride (approx 2000kms) as i was carring a luggage bag of about 10kgs on the back. it handled good then but now without the luggage (even tho the rear sag is still good at little under 25mms) its feeling funny so i thought im best to try for the oem geometry and work from there this time. i have an adjustable rear ride height rod and room to move with the forks.

any one know the original trail for a monster?

if someone here has some expertise, the symptoms are almost like a lack of caster or toe in on a car. it doesnt like to straighten the steering by itself as much as before and hence feels like it wants to wander.

Hey, Roaduser, raising the rear helps maneuverability by decreasing high speed stability.  Lowering the rear or lowering the fork on the triples will increase stability.  Try it a few mms at a time. doesn't take much.  Tires properly inflated, right?
