Title: will full tank of gas leak when propped up vertically?
Post by: COP TZR on January 18, 2012, 12:29:50 PM
I've got my 2000 M750 (metal tank) stored for winter.  I've run the bike with a fuel preservative for winter storage for several minutes, then shut off, took out the battery, then completely filled up the tank with more fuel.

What crossed my mind is when its time to come out of storage.  I will need to lift the tank back up to re-install my battery.  With a full tank of gas, will it leak from the lid or overflow?

tips?

Yes it will leak

Just pick yourself up one of these...

they're available at just about any auto parts store for less than $20.

And pick up a small fuel container. Just syphon a bit of fuel out when it comes time to reinstall the battery then pour it back in when you're done. Easy peasy!!  [thumbsup]

Also available from boat shops.

And, yes, it will leak, and it's really hard on the tank hinge as well, if the bike's on the sidestand.

Next year leave the battery in and hook it up to a trickle charger (e.g., Battery Tender).  The base model is about twice the price of the siphon and will extend the life of the battery for years - my battery is from 2003.

Even better, siphon out the old gas and put it in your car, truck, or lawnmower, and get some nice new gas for the Monster.

ahhh crap.  I figured I would get this kind of response.  I have a bench top trickle charger to maintain my battery over the winter months and thats why I took it out.  Bike is on stands, so I dont plan on propping it up using the sidestand.  Guess I'll have to suck out a few liters to a safe level where she wont leak.

Thanks everyone, cant wait for the spring weather!

Don't leave it propped up overnight even with a partial tank full of gas either. It will still leak and ruin the paint on the tank. Don't ask me how I know.

Have you thought of draining the tank completely & using that fuel elsewhere, then using the tank "downtime" to treat it with POR-15 cleaner/rust neutralizer/sealant...? [thumbsup]

Owners manual for 98 600 warns to make sure there is less than 5 l/1.3 gal  Not only may leak, as stated it is very hard on hinge and tank. I have a vague idea that failing to do this can result in leaks around hinge in steel tanks. Can't remember where i read/heard this
