Title: pulling my stock exhaust can off - udder only system
Post by: PanDuc on June 22, 2008, 08:22:13 PM
I have pulled my stock exhaust cans off and i am just running a udder only exhaust system.  i have been told that the udder provides enough back pressure that i would not damage my motor.    Am i safe or should i put the rest of the system back on?
I removed the rest of the sytem for a better sound - but if i destroy my motor it will not be worth it. [bang] [bang]

What are your thoughts?? [popcorn]

thanks

OK lets take it one step further...  How do they make up the back pressure in the MOTO CREATIONS Boom tubes?

RE: running with udder only

you will be much happier if you put on a couple of slash tip nubs on the udder to direct the gas back.

the noise is pretty intense and the udder directs it almost straight up.

someone on TOB cut their S pipes to make some small slash tips and direct the gas back, looks more finished too.

Would the same ruling apply to my '03 620? I've been wanting to remove my cans for a while now.

Any idea what the diameter is on those pipes?

620 does not have an udder, just the header and a collector.  probably should have something.  the SSS bikes' exhausts are totally different.

You should be fine.  Regarding adjustments to "making up the back pressure" the stock system is a closed loop.  As long as (1) the change is small and (2) the udder doesn't let outside air into the system, then (dreaded) O2 sensor provides feedback to the stock ECU to adjust the A/F mixture so that it will be tuned to the OEM state (slight lean-ness, but not harmful lean)

If you want to be sure, ride it udder-only for a bit and then pull the plugs to check.

Oh, I did the udder only thing for ~40 miles and my ears hurt (even with ear plugs) because it was so loud.

put some slash-tips to direct the noise down and back and it helps a lot

It was just enroute to the dealer to be swapped into ExBox.

someone did it on their bike on TOB, maybe you can find the pics.  it doesn't fix the sound level, but directs it back and down more, plus it puts sometime better looking on the udder exit pipes

I think the ExBox was ~$900 last year.  No idea what they are this year given currency exchange rates.
