Title: Dodge Dart
Post by: MendoDave on January 22, 2012, 09:29:27 PM
I heard about this on car talk today. I figured it would look something like the old Dart, but it looks more like an updated Neon.

There's a bunch of chatter about it in this thread:

http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=25129.msg997918#msg997918 (http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=25129.msg997918#msg997918)

I'd say a Fiat Neon is a fairly accurate description.

There is no MPG rating on the Dodge website about it.

Seems like MPG in general takes a backseat to HP when it comes to MoPar stuff.

As it should.

The "yeah, it's got a HEMI" campaigns really hurt them.

Most people associate them with big HP, but not with MPG.

Well the MPG came to mind when I noticed that all three engines were inline 4's and one of them was a 1.4L turbo. But yet No MPG rating. maybe they should offer the 3.6 in that thing too.

They are claiming up to 40MPG as reported here:

http://www.autoblog.com/2011/12/07/marchionne-2013-dodge-dart-will-have-optional-9-speed-auto-hit/ (http://www.autoblog.com/2011/12/07/marchionne-2013-dodge-dart-will-have-optional-9-speed-auto-hit/)

But, they are having issues with the Hyundai sourced 9spd slushbox:

http://www.autoblog.com/2012/01/19/dodge-dart-to-use-transmission-from-hyundai/ (http://www.autoblog.com/2012/01/19/dodge-dart-to-use-transmission-from-hyundai/)

Have you noticed that these slush boxes aren't as slush as they used to be?

Have you driven a Hyundai lately?  Or a Ford?  Or a Nissan ;D

All kidding aside, most are getting much better.

I was really disappointed in the '12 Ford Fiesta that I drove last week, however.

yea I haven't driven those. Mazda 3, Chrysler 300, GMC Acadia and my Mercedes E320 (which is going on 12 years old now) are the most recent ones I have driven. They have tight transmissions. I guess I figured it was the new way of doing things.

Meh.  :P

I recall reading in some auto industry column that the new Dart is Alfa-based. If true, that's one way to make a hideous Alfa Romeo.....

I was in a Ford Fusion rental and was quite impressed by the slushbox. Although the one in my 12 Chevrolet Malibu is a POS for sure.

They don't have it yet.

When the MPG ratings are finalized, they are posted on fueleconomy.gov -- nothing for 2013 yet.

Let me start this by saying:

I will NOT be buying one.

Now that I've got that out of the way, I'll say that this is a much better successor to the Neon than the Caliber ever was. A friend of mine bought a new neon in college...round 05 or so, and it was an excellent car...for her.  [laugh] It was cheap, drove decently...had everything a economy car should, plus some. I heard the SRT neon was a hoot to drive...never got in one myself though

I think the Dart will do a great job as a replacement for that  [thumbsup]

P.S.--while it isn't exactly pretty, I'm glad to see dodge is finally starting to add a little design sense

If your ever around I can take you for a ride in my neon srt4

Here's a shot from the auto show

Srt version which is probably photo shopped.

Personally I wouldn't touch it unless in srt trim.. but I'd rather them come out with the demon.. then make an srt version of that..

Considering those are Scion FR-S concept wheels, I would think you are right about the photoshop. LOL.

When I saw the thread title, I thought it was a new variant of Dodgeball...  [evil]

Then I saw the car and was highly disappointed, yet not surprised...   :P

I hope for Dodge's sake this thing is better than the Caliber. I had the opportunity to tool around in said Caliber as a rental on two separate occasions. Perhaps the worst car I have ever driven. (no offense to any Caliber owners here)

you forgot to insert the clip of video from Dodgeball where Rip Torn goes there and then throws a wrench at the kid and hits him in the head...

I drove a caliber to Niagara falls..  it was ok but I wouldn't pay more then 3k for a new one..  comfort wise my wife hated it, I don't uncomfortable in anything so im not good in judging that aspect..   I liked it better then a base 05' v6 stang though..

I am watching a show about SRT's that I recorded and they drove this to 162 MPH on the Auto Bahn.

It doesn't look like something that would go that fast.

Heck if I can keep my GMC Jimmy at 55 going up the hill it's doing good.

This one isn't mine but I have one that looks exactly like this one except mine has extra dents and stuff

Later on the show the Jeep turns an 8:49 at Nurburgring.

I was very much anticipating the return of Alfa to US soil, but I will never purchase one under the Dodge badge.   [bang]

I think Alfa is passing up a great opportunity to become a niche Italian made car that the masses can afford.

Not many of my generation have the negative stigma of the Alfa brand of yester years.

Another comparison.

Sexy Italian goodness:

Then Dodge gets a hold of it and:
