Title: salvaged title?
Post by: kittay on January 25, 2012, 10:31:50 AM
I was just curious what your opinions were regarding a salvaged title on a bike?

I am looking to buy an s2r, however it has the salvaged title. The parts have all been replaced, but it still worries me slightly. I can get it for a good price, but I know that if I go to sell it the resale price will be effected as well.

So what are your thoughts, should I go for it, where it's a good price, or steer away? Opinions??

It will help if you tell us where you live.  Laws and regulations differ from state to state.  Salvage or reconstructed?  In other words, can you register the bike?  In most states a bike that was declared salvage must go through an inspection before it can be registered.  Usually the inspection requires proof of purchase on the replacement parts, used or new.  Getting the bike to and fro for inspection is also a PITA, since it is not street legal.  It is best if the seller did this.

Salvage and reconstructed bikes can be a good deal if the damage was cosmetic.   I would not pay more than half value unless I was in love.  You should also have the bike checked by an expert, particularly for frame and engine damage you might not pick up.  Also be aware many insurance companies will not insure a bike that was salvage for comp or collision.

I picked up my 999 with a salvage title for a song...

A friend and noted Ducati-o-phile checked it out, as well as a dealer.

I put it in the back of my truck and brought it back to California.

All the damage had been cosmetic, and all parts had been replaced.

I had it inspected by CHP and CA DMV.  All the numbers matched up, and I was able to register it as a clean title bike.

YMMV...

Good Luck.  [thumbsup]

I can't help but think somebody at your DMV screwed up there and you lucked out.
One state can give clear title after another titled it as salvaged?

I totaled my monster at a track day last year. (Highside)
I bought it back from the insurance co. (Salvage title) fixed it,  had it inspected by the state police, you need bill of sale, receipts for parts, two locations to check the vin number.  Good thing I placed the frame sticker under the seat. And pics of before and after the repairs.
Now I have a rebuilt title and full insurance coverage again.

Ps all cosmetic damage thanks to frame and front axle sliders by R&G Racing

I've read of dealers doing this intentionally to get a clear title on a salvage bike.

Otherwise, if it's rebuilt and titled in the same state the title will always carry the 'rebuilt from salvage' flag.

To the OP: be sure to check with your insurance company as some may not insure a rebuilt bike.

bought one once, leveraged the title for a better deal and never looked back

a confirmed "cosmetic" salvage is golden if you never plan on selling it (or are at least realistic about re-selling it)

just be extra scrupulous with the pre purchase inspection. Ive seen a couple "cosmetic" salvages that looked great but had *little* problems like cracked motor mounts and bent forks.
