Found a very nice 02 900 on craigslist. As this being my first ducati knowing what issues these have normally would help me very much. Waht do i need to look for, the guy who i may be purchasing it from says that he has all the maintenence reciepts for me to go through. Should i be looking for anything there? All help is greatly appreciated. im so excited to get my first duc!
I strongly recommend taking an independent expert with you.
Make sure you have the red key and code card if the immobilizer is still active.
If the timing belts are over two years old they need to be changed.
If the tires are five years old it is time for new ones.
Check the rear of the engine for cracks where the engine mount bolt passes through. Not a common problem, but...
Only year a 900 motor was offered with the immobilizer. If the ecu's stock & works: that's cool. If it's a Ducati Performance ecu: MAJOR bonus points (rare part).
12mm engine mounting bolts: good.
Steel tank: good. (be sure to ask it it's been re-painted & look for fuel leaking (or brown staining) @ the hinge area)
Look for cracks in the gauge lenses as they're glued together on those bikes and would need to be replaced as a unit. (BIG $)
Outside of that... Solid bike!!
it has 18000 on in and its last service was at 14500 how often do the valves need to be done?

okay, so the last service was about 4K ago...but how long ago was that timewise?...if it was more than 2 years, belts should be done as previously stated, and other various rubber compenentry may need addressing from lack of usage...after all, it is a 10 year old bike, that has what amounts to about 1800 miles a year, which is extremely low...
the valves need to be checked every 12K, unless certain specific modifications have been done ( ie: MBP collets)...IF the owner did the valves at 14,500, you are probably okay on THAT front for awhile....but if the valves weren't checked at that point, and he can't provide you any kind of evidence as them having been done at any point, then you should seriously consider that...
as far as value adding up...well...to me, it means it is a potentially killer bike, or a very dressed up project....throwing a list of accessory mods at you doesn't add value to me, because what if they aren't mods I want, or not having stock parts for to change it back to my desired preference....so to me, the value of those mods seems on the worthless side, even as nice as those mods are...so it is a moot point...and besides....where's the pics?!?!?!
lol i go out today and pick her up if everything checks out so pics very soon! and although the list of mods is extensive, its something i would have done to the bike anyway knowing me. But i do need to take the rear set cover off and get some passenger pegs put on the thing.
Check the sprockets for wear. Ignore the 14t front sprocket 'mod.' You can put whatever you want on there when you replace the sprockets and chain, and that's a couple hundred bucks. So if there is noticeable wear there, maybe you can talk him down a tad.
Sounds a lot like this bike that I built for Uglyducky, but it's an '01:

What a small world, I was gonna buy that bike almost 4 years ago when the previous previous owner still had it!!!
It looked a lot different then.
You picked up one hell of a machine David, congrats!! [thumbsup]
And, if he's not too far for you, Speeddog knows that bike inside and out on top of being an all around awesome dude. You should take it to him for servicing.
Congrats on the purchase, Supra. [beer]
I'll look over the maintenance records for it, and reply to your PM.
Uglyducky was really good about taking care of his ride, so it shouldn't need much, depending on how much the PO rode it.
PM me the mileage and I can fill you in.
If we knew it was Uglyducky's bike this thread would surely have been shorter. CONGRATS!
thanks for all the kind words guys [thumbsup] only other thing ive been in love with like i am with the ducati is my supra. Awesome awesome bike.
and it is my first ducati so that makes me even more uber excited.
Funniest thing about the bike is the looks it gets, people act like theyve never ever seen a ducati before, or when they do get the hinsight to ask they ask me if my bike is broken because of the clutch noise. [laugh] I swear if there was a drool emoticon it would represent my face every time i walk out my door and see her. ;D

There aren't any choices for passenger pegs if you wanna keep those rearsets. Rizoma makes a pretty nice set for that model that has passenger pegs as an option, and the passenger pegs are removable so when she's not riding yu can take them off. You could sell the ones you have and buy the rizomas?

LSL also makes a set but they're really ugly IMO.
