OK, so my buddy just got a brand new 2012 EVO with the termis/filter/ecu, and on deceleration it pops like crazy. I remember hearing that the ECU was supposed to fix popping on decel, and I know it worked on my 2006 S2R. Is this normal, or just a trait of the newer Monsters?
An exhaust leak is a good possibility.
my 796 with termi's popped all the time, dunno if it's the same as the 1100 though
it's still a closed loop system below a certain RPM and therefor still a bit lean.
if you were to enrich it with the PC V and it's O2 optimizer you should be able to rid of it, but IMO it's not needed.
Popping rocks [evil]
Well he just got it back from the 600 mile servise and he mentioned it to them, and it does seem to have mostly disappeared now, so maybe they adjusted something. It does sound a lot better now.
I own a 2011 evo monster and mine still crackels and pops, especially when it's cold. It dies down a bit as the bike warms up....I happend to enjoy the pop...I don't think it's an exhaust leak.
Mine (2011 796) does too in low gears when compressing
My 696 with the termi kit popped all the time on decel in 2nd or first, my 797 with arrows also pops...but considerablly less im hoping a reflash will increase the popping [evil]
I love setting car alarms off at zero throttle ;D
One of the reasons i loved my evo was because of the popping sound. Just love it. After a while the stock exhaust started doing it less and less [thumbsdown]. I bought a leo vince exhuast and its back and even louder. [thumbsup] [Dolph] [beer]
The popping was one of the main reasons I bought the bike. Gives it character.
My bike used to do this too but the dealer found that my exhaust valves were too tight and adjusted them, it doesn't pop nearly as much now and it runs a whole lot better.
Maybe I got the oddball Evo. Mine doesn't pop on decel except once in a while. I kinda miss it.
Mine has the termi slipons ecu and air box and seems to pop a lot on deceleration. I was thinking of reflashing the stock ecu to turn off o2 sensor. I like the popping but concerned the lean condition below 4k will shorten engine life. I dont think there is an exhaust leak, just seems to be the nature of the beast [evil]

How so?

I'm no rocket scientist when it comes to engines but its my understanding that running lean makes the engine run hot. This tends to lead to 'pinging'/'knocking', or preignition. This can cause increased cylinder pressures and heat, and can hammer bearings, prematurley wear rings/ring lands, burn pistons and valves, wear conrods, the list goes on...
I should also add that my bike seem to pops and cackles more now (with the Termi system) than when it was stock. I'm Also keen to check valve clearences now my bike is broken in.
