The only bike i can find within my price range is a 2003 620 monster. He's asking $3,500, he told me the price was firm. He says he bought it for $3,500 and spent like $1,000 on it with servicing, tires and the short tail.

12,000 miles
Brand new back tire, chain and sprockets
Recent oil and plugs change.
Short tail with integrated lights
Minor dents on the tank.

What do you all think? The bike looks like it's in awesome condition. He says its mechanically in perfect condition. I'm going to take it for a test drive this weekend.

I recently bought something similar after shopping around for a long time. That's a fair price. Not great, but fair. Ask to see the service records. Has it had its 12000-mile service? If not, add that to your cost.

He says he has receipts for the servicing he's done.
How do I know what was supposed to be serviced?
Like is there a website I can see what Ducati recommends every so many miles.

If you google around you can find others. A lot of the stuff you can do yourself. I'd suggest getting the factory manual or the Haynes service and repair book.
 

That IS exactly like my bike, and that is the exact price I plan on asking.

That said, I would make sure that his 1000 he spent included a belt change, and valve adjustment (not just an oil change and bike bling).

If it's got new belts and a recent valve adjustment...I say go for it. If it doesn't...contact me and I'll sell you the exact same bike for the same price WITH new belts and a valve job  [laugh]

I'll even give you my service manual at no extra charge  [thumbsup]

Wow, bikes are cheap in the US :)

Bought a 620 '03 here in the EU with ~14000 miles on it for ~$4400, and I still had to add on another $400 service on it. Still, that's approx. $1500 cheaper than what you would normally pay for a bike like that here.

I had a 03 M620.  It's a great bike and the price is ok (dent on the tank).  I sold mine 2 years ago for 3,900 in near perfect condition.  It had 9K miles.  I threw in QD titanium hi-mount, oil cooler, Pazzo levers, and other minor bolt-ons for another $500.

The 2003 has a steel tank (+) and the first year with fuel injection (+).  But it only has 5 speed (-) so highway commuting might be a little busy with 60+ MPH.  I believe 2004+ comes with 6 speed. 

My 2001 M600 cruises at 65 mph in 4th pretty comfy. Depends on the sprocket ratio I guess?

JoeyJ, just for comparison, I paid $3500 for my bike with <4k miles + some aftermarket mods (exhaust, seat, rearsets, clip ons). Not a scratch. It needed new tires, belts, sprockets, chain-- about $600 in added costs. Oh yeah, gear and tools were another $1000, cos I'm a newbie. :)

I spoke with the seller and he's telling me the belts weren't replaced because the shop that serviced the bike said they were still good. I looked up the shop and it is a reputable shop. How much would it cost to have it replaced? Is it DIY friendly??

I would play it safe on the belts and change them. Rather safe than sorry (broken belt=destroying your engine). You can do belts yourself...no worries. Did they adjust the valves?

He says the valves were adjusted. He is going to send me the service order form from when it was serviced.

Regarding the belts, is it just the 2 timing belts that need to be changed? yes, those are the belts.

iirc, the belts are recommended to be changed 12,000 miles OR two years... so... yeah.

if all you need are the belts, that's still not a bad price, IMO

So all it needs are the belts? Yeah...I'd go for it. Belts are easy to do, but you should definitively do them.

If you wanted to be a badass negotiator, I'd make him knock the price of the belts off the 3500...but I don't know that I'd turn it down if he didn't go for it

If 2003 belts have never been changed, they're around eight years old. I wouldn't trust a dealer who said they don't need to be changed to do any work on the bike.

I think im going to go for the bike. I'll see if he can bring the price down a bit but i doubt it.

That's what the seller says the shop said.

I'm going to have the bike taken to a shop to get inspected. I already found a shop and they're gonna charge me $100 to give it a full check up. About an hour of inspection they said. Depending on what they tell me(which they should just tell me the belts need to get replaced) is what i'll base my offer on.

Yeah man. I'm kinda with Teddy on this one. I'm not so sure they did a proper 12k maintenance. If you pick up the bike, I'd probably take it to a Ducati shop and have them look it over real good, or if you're a DIYer: pick up the service manual and check it all yourself.

Not to say there is anything wrong with the bike, but I'd play it safe...this is an Italian bike  [laugh]

also, in my googling, their ratings on yelp and yahoo local were a mixed (and almost suspect) bag.

OP, +1 on having your shop really give it a good going over. best case scenario is that the bike is still in good kit, and you're paying for peace of mind  [beer]

I saw the bike last night and it was a little rough...

Clutch lever was broken
the dent on the tank was about 3 inches in diameter and about 1 inch deep (much bigger than i thought)
Front fender had a big part with paint missing, like it had been sanded down almost.
The shorter rear end(where the rear seat is) has no paint.
The handle bars look rough, its black paint is peeling off.
Regarding the timing belt, he says he does not know if it has been replaced. He's only owned the bike for 6 months.
Some of the metal parts on the bike look rough, Looks oxidized without the rust color (if you can picture that lol)

On the plus side, it ran good.... This is my 1st bike so that doesn't mean much lol, but i didn't hear any weird noises, shifted smoothly and idled normally.

I made him an offer of 3000 later on during the night and he said he could not go below 3500.... So now back to square one....

I'm gonna make a new thread on a 2000 monster 750 to see what you all think. I'm going to meet with that person this weekend.

Don't think it was worth 3500. You probably made a smart choice to move on....more fish in the sea, etc. etc.....

I should look into selling mine!!

Have to admit though..it is a bit rough and the mileage might bring it down a couple hundred bucks.

Haha, yea there was no way i could do 3500. I think i found my bike, not a Ducati tho :/

I really wanted one.. but you cant be too picky and this is a great deal. 2007 Yamaha r6 for 4500.. I wasn't looking to spend this much but i can easily turn around and sell it for 5200+. I saw it earlier today and its in pristine condition! At least i'll save a lot of $ on maintenance.

not to mention the nails curse
