Title: Please help!! Someone messed with the lock and caused the frame to bend!! Post by: THEBHJBmonster on February 01, 2012, 03:27:52 AM Hi guys,
As you can see by the fact that I'm posting this at well past 3 a.m. that I'm definitely losing sleep over this nightmare. Anyway to make a long story short, someone messed with the lock which caused a bent frame and a broken steering head and lock, as you can note on the pictures attached below. First, I noticed that the steering won't lock on the left position and that the ignition module had shifted downward to the left. So, I decided to further investigate the issue by removing the plastic trim covering the lock area of the frame. Then the nightmare became reality! I don't know what to do as I read that any damage to the frame will cause the insurance co. to total the bike!! :'( Oh and are you ready for the cherry on top of all of this? I just finished installing Speedymoto frame sliders and Rhino barend sliders with LS mirros when I made the discovery on my 2012 Monster 696 with ZERO MILES on it!! (http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa462/THEBHJB/Top1.jpg) (http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa462/THEBHJB/Top2.jpg) (http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa462/THEBHJB/Left1.jpg) (http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa462/THEBHJB/Left2.jpg) (http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa462/THEBHJB/Left4.jpg) (http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa462/THEBHJB/Left3.jpg) (http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa462/THEBHJB/Right1.jpg) Any help and advice will be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Title: Re: Please help!! Someone messed with the lock and caused the frame to bend!! Post by: ducpainter on February 01, 2012, 03:30:49 AM Call your insurance company.

which would you rather....coming out to your bike and seeing it vandalized like this in an attempt to steal it? or it being all out gone altogether? either way, you are calling your insurance... I thought most dope heads knew about immobilizers. Not often, but whenever I go a full day without riding - I try to remember turning the ignition on to activate the flashing warning light on the dash. Scorpio alarm could also prevent this [thumbsup] Title: Re: Please help!! Someone messed with the lock and caused the frame to bend!! Post by: THEBHJBmonster on February 02, 2012, 01:43:09 AM So you guys think that it's gonna be totaled then? Any advice of how one should proceed in dealing with the insurance? Like I said it's a 2012 with zero miles on it so it sounds like I'm gonna take a big hit $-wise...
Title: Re: Please help!! Someone messed with the lock and caused the frame to bend!! Post by: MikeZ on February 02, 2012, 03:40:40 AM Shouldn't take much if any hit other then the deductible. It's a brand new bike. Show them what you paid for the bike and accessories and that's what they should pay you. If they offer less keep fighting until you get what the bike cost.

Title: Re: Please help!! Someone messed with the lock and caused the frame to bend!! Post by: thought on February 02, 2012, 05:43:23 AM or see how much it would be to buy it back from the insurance company. if you got full value on it and can get those bit repaired cheap you'll actually make out with a decent amt of cash. though expect your resale value to plummet.
Title: Re: Please help!! Someone messed with the lock and caused the frame to bend!! Post by: ducatiz on February 02, 2012, 12:53:18 PM and that's not a structural problem.
you could fix it, but it would require pretty much removing the frame and have it welded and repainted. Title: Re: Please help!! Someone messed with the lock and caused the frame to bend!! What do u guys think is a fair buy-back price for a 2012 M696? Title: Re: Please help!! Someone messed with the lock and caused the frame to bend!! Insurance companies don't want them, so they usually go by blue book minus some amount (50%?) the problem is that your bike has ZERO miles. Title: Re: Please help!! Someone messed with the lock and caused the frame to bend!! Post by: xcaptainxbloodx on February 02, 2012, 07:27:54 PM it will total for sure. structural or not, any damage to a frame is an instant write off.

Post by: Desmo Demon on February 02, 2012, 07:32:35 PM Insurance companies don't want them, so they usually go by blue book minus some amount (50%?) A buddy of mine totaled an '08 CBR1000RR and the insurance company wouldn't give him the option to buy it back. They stated that since he didn't own it outright, the lein holder actually owned it and that it was the bank's call fi they wanted it or not. This was the first time I'd heard of such a thing because the banks want the money, they don't want a totaled motorcycle. The reality of it is that the insurance company paid off the loan, so they should have received the title. We suspected the claims adjuster had a buddy that wanted the it for a trackbike. That's very weird and nonsense. The bank accepts a settlement from insurance, and 9/10 they have their own insurance rider which covers the full amount of the loan. Title: Re: Please help!! This might be me, but from the photos you posted it looks like the only structural damage was to the steering lock mount points on the frame and the top triple. Both things which can be fixed relatively easily and for not to much $$$....First, I noticed that the steering won't lock on the left position and that the ignition module had shifted downward to the left. (http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa462/THEBHJB/Left1.jpg) (http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa462/THEBHJB/Left2.jpg) (http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa462/THEBHJB/Left4.jpg) Any help and advice will be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Actually bending the frame/steering head would require hitting a curb fast enough to crack the front wheel and damage the forks. I doubt that whoever tried to steal your bike had enough strength to manage that. Best of luck! Title: Re: Please help!! Someone messed with the lock and caused the frame to bend!! In my opinion the location is not that visible to require a professional repaint. :-\ Not to mention totalling a new bike for something so small! :o Title: Re: Please help!! Someone messed with the lock and caused the frame to bend!! Post by: freeclimbmtb on February 03, 2012, 06:32:17 AM I lowsided my 696 at about 25mph and did $5800 in damage. including the frame, swingarm, bars, right rearset/brake, and the right fork. The frame damage (the tank mounts bent SLIGHTLY) alone wrote off the bike, Progressive pays dollar for dollar on all accessories, so they ended up cutting me a check because the aftermarket doodads raised the total value above the writeoff limit. Depending on what you have bolted on the bike, they might just repair it...but per Ducati...ANY frame damage is a new frame, and if you look at the alignment gap between the keyguard and the triple, theres clearly frame damage. (admitedly, its probably not enough to change the handling of the bike)

Post by: THEBHJBmonster on February 22, 2012, 04:06:25 PM So do you guys think that I should buy it as a salvage from the insurance company? Can I resell it with a salvage title? It is still a "brand new bike" with ZERO miles on it.
Title: Re: Please help!! Someone messed with the lock and caused the frame to bend!! Post by: justinrhenry on February 22, 2012, 04:11:41 PM i say take the money and buy a new bike. that's why you pay for insurance. not so you have to deal with a crappy broken bike.

Post by: Mhanis on February 23, 2012, 04:29:08 AM Somewhere down the road if you decide to sell your bike and it has a salvaged title you will regret it. Almost nobody wants to buy a bike with a "story". You can explain all you want, but it still has a story and that will work against you.
New bike. Title: Re: Please help!! Someone messed with the lock and caused the frame to bend!! Post by: cokey on February 23, 2012, 06:52:09 AM Unless its someone on here who knows how little damage and easily fixable it is.. -_-
