Title: Ignition Switch has gone bad. Which models will fit as a replacement?
Post by: pslinux on February 01, 2012, 06:15:10 AM
My 99 M750 has a bad ignition switch, the contacts are bad inside the unit and the bike comes on like 5% of the time when you turn the key.  Don't want to get stranded anywhere so I'm replacing it.

I'm pretty sure any Monster ignition switch will work in replace of it, but what about other years and models?

Correct, battery is fine too. I even had a fix where I jumped the harness to make the "P" work as "ON" as well. Just had an extra parking light on while I rode around (also had to shave the handlebar lock off). Now that stopped working, but that could be a cold solder.  Just trying to get a permanent fix on this thing.  I've noticed some of the S*Rs and other bikes come with nicer looking keys but same look on the switch and harness, was wondering if that would work since I dont have their wiring diagrams.  Also you can find them pretty cheap on ebay in good condition.

as far as wiring diagrams, there are good ones in the Desmo Times guide as well as if you were to look on Ducati's website under an 01 Monster 750 which is the same set-up....

I'd be looking at the bundle of wiring that wraps around the frame steering head up to the switch for loose and broken wires though....

I checked it all when I took it off and made the jumper for it.  I'm pretty sure it's inside the switch.

You can try to drill out the two screws in the back and replacing the spring(s):http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=28476.0 (http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=28476.0).  2.5 years later it is still working though I did go to a clockmaker to put better spring in it.

Thanks for the advice, I'll try that. I noticed it was not going to be easy to get into.

Found the problem.  A wire had been pinched, the insulation worn, and was grounding out on the inside of the switch housing.  Which also explains why my jumper in the wire harness stopped working as well. If anyone thinks it's a good idea I'll post some pictures and a mini-write-up.

Word.  Now as a result of it taking a week to find a grounding issue my battery was completely drained and killed itself.  I swear.  [bang]  Ordered a new sealed, maintenance-free battery, herd they were worth the extra money.

To answer your original (and now pointless question), any Monster ignition switch for a NON-IMMOBILIZER equipped bike will fit from 1993-2008.  However, your gas-cap and seat lock won't have the same key anymore so there's that.
