Title: motogp rocked yesterday.... ( spoiler )
Post by: svoloch on June 23, 2008, 10:45:44 AM
Anybody else catch it?  Stoner qualified for pole in the rain, then shot off the line and they never caught him...   He finished with over a 5 second gap...  Battling for 2nd and 3rd was pedrosa and rossi, and it was QUITE the battle, multiple pass/repass situations, but in the end, Rossi is just at home in those types of battles, while pedrosa is definitely a rocket, but he seems to need to get out in front and just stay there ( like last week ).

Speaking of last week, NONE of the desmosedicis stability issues were in evidence.  Somebody figured out SOMETHING, because this was the old, unstoppable Stoner that we have all been missing.  His lines were sharp, execution was crisp and smooth, and the mothermake the beast with two backser was just plain fast as shit!

Spies appears to have done ok ( 15th on an unfamiliar bike on an unfamiliar track ) but unremarkably.  If he gets a shot at Assen, it might get interesting ( tougher track, but he's had seat time in the gp bike now )

anyway, fun race, I'll probably watch it tonight again ;)

I would, but...

1. I would need to own a TiVo [bang]

2. I would need to get SPEED [bang]

3. I would need cable.  [bang]

I'm waiting for TW to provide services at my apt complex.  Looks like the end of this month at least

I heard that some old fart keeps them TIVO'd.

Stoner said (either on cycle news, road racing world or SBK planet... I read them all online) that Ducati did a super job testing at Mugello after that GP and came away with some really good results. I'd say that pretty much showed in this Sunday's race. Besides, some teams just find the golden ring at some races and some tracks definitely suit certain bikes and riders. I think their universe was in alignment at Ducati and Stoner was really on his game. Great race! [thumbsup] Of course I think their secret weapon is Sete Gibernau and his hair and the fact that he (and his hair) is doing the testing for the Duc MotoGP group. Must be the styling muse... [laugh]

Stoner credited an electronic breakthrough for his bike's performance.  Pretty funny imo.  You take away all those fancy electronics and Stoner would poof into the sunset.  He claimed they were able to settle down the chassis and control the engine to keep the bike from bucking all over the place... translation:  Stoner is able to hamfist the throttle at full lean again and the electronics cover up the mess for comfortable victories.  I hope this doesn't start another run like last year.  I enjoy fights for first.

Can tell I really don't like Stoner eh?   :P

what little of F1 i've watched this year, no TC makes a huge difference and makes for a much more exciting race.  electronics i think are great, but overall J you are right, it covers/makes up for skill.

we all know that rossi can slide all around these electronic bred racers.

Ashock, Lisa and I were talking about the dumping of traction control from F1 yesterday at lunch in Muenster. Doc's was kind enough to have the French F1 GP on the big screen TV for us upstairs. I'm just waiting for the new and improved Electronics Package for bionic neck control to trickle down to me! Can't wait for that upgrade!!! [laugh] I'll ride like the wind after that. [moto]

Of course Rossi can walk all over Stoner; as the Grand Statesman of MotoGP, Rossi's got more years on GP bikes of all stripes than almost everyone.

I mean is Stoner even old enough to shave?  His sippie cup prolly had traction control for godssake  [laugh]

That's good! Even Jen (the resident hater of all things motorcycle) who wouldn't know Rossi from Michelangelo knows Stoner as "that baby faced kid". She can't believe he's old enough to be married. Too damn young to be married in my book! So many umbrella girls so little time. [evil] They should have a baby face contest between Stoner and Pedrosa!

There is no doubt Rossi is extremely talented but we can't all be Rossi fans.  If we all were, we might as well have him ride around alone and hand him the trophy after his world tour.  Currently, he is the best of the most experienced GP riders.

In all fairness, these new kids are talented too.  Last year's champion was the best package of bike, team, tires and rider among other things.  The Desmosedici is the most powerful and fastest bike on the grid but without electronics, it is not easy to ride at the competetive levels required to win against the best in the world.  This year, more experienced riders like Melandri can't get along with the Ducati.  Last year, Capirossi couldn't match Stoner despite his experience with Ducati and the GP scene either.  The year before that Sete couldn't match Loris.  Casey is the only one who can ride the bike even when it is not at its best and win when it is.  That has to say something about him.

Rossi used to hound Sete Gibernau running behind him only to take the lead in the last lap and at one time put Sete in the dirt on a last lap, last turn pass to win.  Rossi destroys his opponents after he toys with them for awhile.  I'm not sure if Pedrosa has the cajones to beat Rossi in a tight race.  He didn't last year but may be trying this year.  Lorenzo is on the same bike as Rossi except for the tires and has done well for himself except for his injuries.  He likes to challenge Rossi.  Casey and his Ducati is one of a very few with the mindset that he can beat Rossi.  Having done it last year gives him confidence he can.

Traction control and electronics maybe the only way riders can race these GP bikes which are likely more powerful than their lighter more peaky two stroke counter parts of the past.  Tire technolgy won't be able to keep up without it.  Traction control in 4 wheel racers is a different thing.  That kind of racing is boring anyway. ;D

Although Casey ran away with the race last Sunday, Pedrosa did the same the weekend before that.  In both cases, Rossi had a good fight for second with Pedrosa and with Casey.

I guess it shows that I like Stoner but respect Rossi.

Stoner will win that too.  He has bigger teeth. [thumbsup]

Pedrosa has a dour, pained look to him.  Besides, he took Nicky Hayden out in an important race.

What is with all the Stoner bashing?  I LIKE Stoner.  Take a look at last week's race, and tell me who could have ridden that bucking bronco of a desmo like he did?  Jake, I think it was you that was complaining that Ducati had put a bike out there that only Stoner could manage to ride?  Well, now they fixed it, and he's shooting around the track like a bat out of hell.  Think the Yamaha that Rossi rides doesn't have traction control?  Would he ride it as well if it was all bonkers and the bike was bouncing and sliding around on it?  I'm a Rossi fan also, but I think the answer is pretty clear...

As for Pedrosa taking out Hayden, come on...  that can't be the complaint with Pedrosa, lots of people have wiped out other riders.  This is motorcycle racing, kids...  I would pregnant dog more that Pedrosa can't hang in with a corner battle like Rossi and Stoner can.  Pedrosa runs like a bat out of hell if he gets far enough out front to do it...  but he can't pull off a corner battle.  Rossi LOVES that shit....  you can almost see him smiling when Pedrosa shoots by him, and Rossi rockets back around in front of him.  he gets a little italian stiffy every time, I guarantee.  But if Pedrosa ever figures that shit out, I hope we have him on a duc....

Anyway, it all makes for good racing.  No strong lockins yet, although if they have settled the bike in, look out kids, and prepare to just enjoy the battle for 2nd and 3rd like we have for the last two races ;)

Just my 2cents, you may have your own wrong opinions...

i also like stoner but you can't blame the kid for his age. he grew up in a different time.  i also root for all the americans just because their american. there is no questioning the greatness of rossi it's proven facts. i don't really have a fav but if and when spies gets up and going i will definitely pull for "elbowz" he will become my fav in gp. i do like t2 (bayliss and corser) in wsb.

Pedrosa ran into his teammate (Hayden) in the race that should have crowned Hayden champion.

In most premier series' that'll get you fired.  Not in this case, obviously, so I'll "fire" him!  Hayden all the way  [thumbsup]

Anyone know the prognosis/details on the phneumatic valve situation in Hayden's Honda, post-race?  Will he continue with it or go back to the "regular" Honda motor?

P.S.  Never said nuttin' bashing Stoner; he's the best of the new crop clearly.  Now as far as putting a second Ducati on the track with him...  [roll]  Looks like a damn one-bike effort this year  [bang]

Prior to the race, Honda told Hayden that if he indeed changed engines, then there would be no going back.  I would imagine they'll stick to it.  They asked him to qualify in the top four to get the rights to use it, which he did, and also made the other claim.  Hayden told them to "box up the other bike and send it back" because he doesn't want it anymore.

I'd imagine he'll stick with it and they'll use him as a "tester" to get it set up for their love child, Pedrosa.  Hayden gets the axe at the end of the year and takes a ride with Ducati to replace the axed Melandri.  Those are my predictions!  :P  I also think that under this scenario, Hayden will become the first successful rider on the Ducati after Stoner.  Not championship form, but successful.  The Duc suits his dirt background and riding style.

I agree. He's better off with the Italians than the Japanese. He's been their red headed stepchild for years. Pedrosa is their golden boy. Hell, the year he won the freaking championship he was on a never ending experimental bike. He tested during races all the shit that Pedrosa ended up with! make the beast with two backs Honda. Nicky would be better off and more appreciated anywhere. The guy is a trooper. There is a damn good reason Rossi likes him, he himself said if anyone was to beat him for the '06 championship he wanted it to be Hayden. It's just not said any better than that and who better to say it?

NOT a Hayden fan.  I don't think the raw talent is there.  Hopefully, Ducati figures this out.  Developing someone like Pedrosa has much more promise, as he knows how to go fast, and doesn't whine nearly as much.  Honda!!  you can keep Hayden!!!

I agree with you that Pedrobot is the talent to bank your future on.  He has the pedigree and experience having taken the traditional path that Hayden lacks.  Hayden has reason to whine though.  He's never been given the respect or the resources from Honda to excel the way Pedrosa has.  I'm not claiming he's a better rider, but even when he was championship hunting, Honda spoke outright that he was not their priority.  I'd be pissed too if my factory sponsor used me as a testing bed for another man.  Honda could at least take a more subtle approach with him.  See, Colin Edwards knew he was essentially Rossi's wingman.... hell Edwards is everyone's wingman, he simply can't win anything in GP, but Hayden didn't sign on for that role initially.
