Title: missing tang on clutch plate
Post by: Roaduser on February 12, 2012, 09:21:51 PM
Was due for oil change and i had some new oil lines to put on, so i thought id pull the clutch cover off and check the nut is still tight just incase. heres what i found.

after pulling all the plates out and checking them this is the only one with damage. ill put it back together the way it was, i dont see it as a problem. i looked around but cant find the piece that has broken off anywhere or any damage caused by it flying around. i can only assume its safely fallen into the sump....

question about the nut, it has a paint marker on it from original build as well as a bent over locking washer. i havent undone it as i dont see it being a problem as it is and i didnt wanna muck around with whats not broken. Was this nut coming undone a problem only on earlier models without a locking nut? or do they come loose and simply flatten out the locking washer?

another thought, and i havent looked in manual yet, but on the steel clutch plates they each have a notch out of the outer edge, none of which line up or have any kind of order. should they?

Out of balance rotating weight is not good.  I'd replace the whole set.

Intriguing, I'm wondering how that could happen ! Even a real klutz with a big hammer couldn't do that accidentally. I assume they were stamped out in a press, maybe it got broken off then and Guido didn't notice during assembly.

If I was Guido and saw that I'd probly just put it in, so yeah, like you I'd run with it.

BTW for a 2002 model the tangs look surprisingly unbattered.

So where's the tab? That's what I'd be wondering about on a wet clutch...

not enough weight to matter.  i'd use it, snap off the opposite tang as said above if you're that worried about balance.

yeah, i want to know where it went too...  it could be in the bottom of your sump trapped..  the pickup strainer will keep it out

i can't find the tab anywhere. I'm gonna assume that either Guido didn't notice it missing when he put it together in the first place or that the tab is just resting safely in the bottom of the sump.

and yeah the clutch does look in remarkably good condition otherwise. while it is a '02 built bike, it hibernated for 6 years in the interim so i am only at the 12000km mark.
