Just saw a trailer for the premiere of the 2012 National Geographic Ultimate Factories series - "Ducati" which will be aired on Saturday at 8 PM EST, 02/18/2012 on the National Geographic Channel. Check your local listings. I imagine you could later watch it on Comcast "catch up" as well. My program guide states, "A Ducati factory in Italy is visited for a look at the making of the Multistrada 1200 sport bike".

Says "new" and "2012" on the listing but I can't imagine NG would shoot two shows on the 1200 MTS.  8) Will be fun to watch in HD anyway.

Going into your 401K are we? ;) Always suspected you had a death wish! ;D I figure that's a bike for the hard core..., and rich dentists / hedge fund types who will mainly stroke it occasionally in the carriage house. [roll] Even in my prime, 195 BHP would have been WAY out of my league!

Somehow I doubt much of that tech will make it to the mainstream bikes. They'd price themselves out of the market.

Oddly I'd prefer to see the Monster line which keeps the doors open and view how much care they take with the serial assembly of the "normal" bikes. I've seen enough specialist lines. Call me weird...

Managed 40 brisk miles this PM as we may get snow tomorrow, but it hit 62 F before the clouds moved in. Might not get 60+ for a while. Aren't you envious up there in NJ?  ;)

Interesting show on the Multi.  It was a good broad-brush of the company, but at least it put the inception of the 1200 in perspective as it sounds like it was conceived during the recession.

I don't know about the 'success' of the 4-into-1 aspects of the bike but sales seem to have been brisk for a new model.  They kept showing a true MX bike busting through ruts and berms during the show, which would have been more effective if the Multi did that later in the broadcast. (and to illustrate the lengthened suspension travel).

Regardless, it was a good overview for an upscale bike company.

So I missed it (I don't have Natl Geo on my cable system): is there a way to see this on line?

Watching it again right now. I guess I missed the beginning the first time it was on?  I didn't see the pics with Pirozzi after he finished his around the world trip on the 1200. Watching it in slow mo and seeing familiar faces from WDW in Bologna. 

Btw.. The Ducati factory and Bologna is a great (all day) Fri/sat/Sun trip.

After watching it, I am now convinced that the Multi will be my next bike. Just wish they would down size the engine to the 848. Not sure it would be any cheaper though. Even with +2 I think 150hp may be a bit of a waste.

Haha, yeah... it's pretty tempting but I'm being good and thinking in 3 years when there is a solid used market I'll look into getting one then. Those hedge fund managers tend to sell them off by then I think ;)

And it's def too much for any kind of normal road use and I'm interested in seeing how the 848 replacement will work out.  But... there is very solid chance that I will wind up picking one up later.  Fell in love with the look a bit when I saw it at the moto show.  Wont get rid of the SF though, I really do adore that bike.

And the weather was actually pretty warm up here... but couldnt make it out, we got the good weather, but didnt I get the time haha

For you at least, 848 might indeed do it. Your SF is already too much for NY Metro.

I see you have the 4V addiction now..., and I understand, but is that SF as nimble as your 796 was?

Good thing I got out the other day. We had 3" - 4" of wet snow yesterday and overnight. It will be 65 F later this week but they drop some kind of mud on the roads down here which doesn't wash off with a couple of heavy rains. Grrr... Can't b*tch too much as I've had a few decent rides this winter.

The 796 was def a lot more nimble... telepathic directional changes whereas I have throw a bit of weight into the SF for it to turn.  But that 4v lump is just amazing along with that sound.  [thumbsup]

Overall, the 796 is prob a better bike... but it was too good I think.  Haha, I guess I like my bikes the same way I like my women... just a little pregnant dogy to keep me in line because if they just do everything just right I might get bored.

And I'm hoping 3 years because I'm hoping I can get the bike in the kind of time frame where I wont have to lie in bed all day recovering after a long ride on a sbk ;)

With my weak shoulder I need telepathic..., and I agree. It's a really balanced package, just about perfect with a few minor tweaks.

You just like a challenge!  ;) BTW, I wouldn't mind a 4V if they could keep the CG as low as the 2V. Seems nigh impossible. In retirement I can do without the maintenance cost though! ;)

I'll let you in on a little secret and you can pay me back later.  :) Have some supple one-piece leathers custom made when you are in Europe. Mine were German. These give a huge amount of support as long as you can keep your speed up a bit. Nothing helps much in town. Without mine I could never have ridden my 600 SL very long or my 851 into my early 40's.

Interesting show, although it seemed a bit like an hour long commercial to me at times. Still interesting though.

There is another factory tour show around...can't remember the name, but I don't think it is Ultimate Factory. I've seen the Ferrari, Caterpillar, and Lamborghini episodes of that series and they were better. Less focus on a specific model, and more on how the factory itself works. It made the show feel a lot less like a commercial. Ferrari in particular was very good as it showed how they pour their own engine blocks on-site, using their own proprietary bend of Aluminum. Very cool!  [thumbsup]

A KTM SMT is what you're looking for, based on telepathic handling and low CG for that bike style. Less hp, but +/-105 is plenty on the street.  ;D It's about 40 lbs lighter than the MTS1200, and feels 100 lbs lighter.

I'm an old fart and 5' 8" and would need a ladder to get on and off of your 990. I looked briefly before buying the M796 ABS. It's about as lean and low as anything gets these days and has a heartbeat rather than a buzz.  8)

No complaints about my chassis and handling. Only wish it were as light as my 600 SL was. That ain't happening...
