Title: Ducati Monster 796 2011
Post by: jishi on March 02, 2012, 04:20:19 AM
Hello everyone,

I am new to the forum and new to Ducati's. I recently got a monster 796. Have only done 256 miles on it so far. There are no dealers or even motorcycle shops where I live (cayman islands). I knew before I bought the bike if anything went wrong I was going to have to learn on the job. Well, I have encountered my first problem. Was out the other day all was well and it stopped at a roundabout. No problem restarted ok but as soon as I let the clutch out it stopped and this repeated for 10 minutes before I gave up and walked it home. Later that day I took it for a spin around my complex only in first gear and all seemed ok. Yesterday it started ok again in neutral or with clutch in in first but after 20 meters stopped again and did what it had done the previous day at the roundabout.

I am hoping it is nothing serious and one of you knowledgeable guys could give me some clue.

Thanks,

Jishi

Check your battery cables and the ground wires.  A loose wire could cause that kind of intermittent symptom.

There's a switch on the kickstand pivot, it tells the ECU when the stand is down.
There's also a switch on the clutch lever, and the ECU also monitors the neutral light.
All of this is so you don't ride off with the stand down, or try to start it in gear.

Likely it's the kickstand switch malfunctioning, or the connector isn't fully seated.

The bike as soon as you put it into any gear just cuts out. How do I go about disabling the kickstand sensor? I can see the part beside the pivot of the kickstand and the cable running forward and up, not sure what to do after that. Your help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

I've got a 696 here, let me see where the connector on that wire is.

You'll have to pull off the two plastic covers on the front of the engine and front of the frame on the left side to get at the connector.

There should be two wires on the harness side of the connector, fashion a 'jumper' to connect those two, and test to see if it cures the problem.

This is assuming that the 796 is the same as a 696 on locations and configuration....

How is the temperature where you are ? Might be the evaporator can. They removed it from my new 2011 796 because after a ride if I started the bike again it would dies either when i accelerate or after 10 seconds of idling.

Temperature in Celcius is between 25-30 at the moment, similar to Miami where I shipped it from. The bike idles in neutral ok.

I'm in Miami and removing the box helped fix my problem and I was told the bike would work fine without it.
