I just pulled the DP Racing air filter from my 696 (factory installed, so I never did the initial install/inspection) and it looked bent at some of the pleats, but more importantly - the cotton was still white.
I thought it would look like a K&N filter, but the cotton appears to be dry. Is it supposed to be white? Or should it look like a pre-oiled K&N filter?
I've already rode the bike for several hundred miles and did not find any debris/grit in the pleats. I'm thinking either the filter was somehow not pre-oiled or is supposed to be dry.
Was there any residue when you ran a finger over the pleats? They are supposed to arrive pre-oiled. Go buy some K and N air filter oil and have at it.
There wasn't any residue at all, I think it was bone dry. I bought a K&N kit earlier last year, so I used some of the oil.
I didn't appreciate the fact the dealership installed the race filter just before I took delivery, so they knowingly installed a bone dry K&N-style filter!
Both my S2R DP filters were dry.
Maybe that's just how they do it.....
It looks and feels like cotton gauze. I thought about it being dry by design, like one of those nano paper fiber filters - but it's cotton gauze with an aluminum/SS mesh like a K&N. I think they may have to ship it dry to abide by IATA/air regulations otherwise it might be considered hazmat??? I'm not sure, which is why I asked. I ended up oiling the filter though.
When I purchased my Termi system, I was instructed to oil the filter. My question is about the service interval. How often should it be cleaned and reoiled?

Hmmmm, so I was essentially riding around with an ineffective air filter?
It's funny that we have different exp. w/ the same product. My DP air filter came pre-oiled.

If you want to allow more dirt to pass through, clean and oil it regularly.
If you want the filter to be more effective leave it dirty.
I have a K&N in my old carbie monster and haven't cleaned it in 20K miles.
