Title: Caller ID & Unknown Numbers
Post by: mags on June 23, 2008, 09:24:28 PM
Does anyone know how to require callers to unblock there numbers for caller ID on a cell phone?  Is it something you can request from the phone company or a service you can pay for?

I just got some completely inappropriate phone calls from an unknown number.    >:(

Gross.

I'm not sure that cell phone providers have that service. Call and let them know. All calls to your cell phone are logged by the cell company and just because they don't show up on your phone doesn't mean that they can't get the number...

they can't see the number either, any part of it.  and i'm somehow not an authorized user, so they really can't help me.

I'm just totally grossed out and freaked out.  And I can't figure out who in the world who do that, and/or that has my number.

the only thing that has me puzzled, is, would someone in, um, "mid-activity" just randomly dial and hope to get a girl??

Wow, it was all that? I was just thinking it was a talking dirty call...

here's how it went:

ring ring

me:  hello?
creep:  i'm jacking off right now.  want to me help me?
[stunned silence.  lots of moaning - and not the fake kind]
me:  who the hell is this?
creep:  so hot.
[moan.  pant.  moan.]
CLICK.

*runs and locks door*

Calls phone company.

I only answered the unknown because I had called grio a few minutes before, and thought that might have been her returning my call.  Also, my boss' number sometimes comes up as unknown.

And no.  the voice was not my boss'.  EW.

OK, that's just gross. But here's the bad part, based on that, and the kind of person who would do that, he kind of had to know it was at least a girl, if not you specifically. If he was just random dialing, it would probably "ruin" it for him if a guy had picked up...

That's what I'm thinking, which is seriously freaky.  I mean, I guess if someone called and heard my voice mail, they would know it was a girl.  I did have some missed calls a week or so ago from an unknown with no message.

*shrug*

I'm just really creeped out.

Just don't answer the calls that don't show a number.
If they leave a message, then you can find out if it's someone you want to talk to.

Your boss is gonna understand if you tell them why you don't pick up if her/his # doesn't show.

I *think* you can set it up with your cell provider to block calls that don't show a number, but that's just a guess.

I'd call the police, that's sexual harassment.  Is your number listed in the phone book?  He might have just looked it up and assumed it was a girl basing it off your name.  If he can find your phone number I don't think it would be that hard to find your address.

Nope.  Not listed.  It's a cell phone.  The only place where it is listed that I can think of is with the bar association. I know attorneys can log in and search for other attorneys and get addresses, but I'm not sure if they can get phone numbers.  I am almost positive I have my profile set to as private as the state bar will allow, which excludes phone number.

Hopefully it is just a one time thing.

This is one reason I don't use a cell phone for incoming calls. I'm a psychiatrist and I really don't want some of my patients (such as the guys down at the jail) calling me or even more so my wife or kid. With my landline phone I have a service through the telco that refuses unidentified calls. The caller either needs to use *82 to unblock their number or leave a brief voice message before they can get through to me. I've got my number blocked since I make so many calls to patients when I'm on-call, and know that this service works well for a lot of people since I have to route lots of calls through the hospital switchboard. My lifestyle does not make a cellphone mandatory except for returning pages - perhaps yours does. If not, maybe you could temporarily forward calls to a landline with anonymous call reject.

I'm having trouble believing they can't help with this. I think it's more "won't." This sounds like a police matter now. Don't assume it's a one-time thing. My patients with this behavior are fairly predatory and usually keep records of what numbers "work" after making lots of cold calls to numbers that don't. They tend to keep on doing it until they're stopped.

sounds like a random call.

I wouldn't worry about it.

I would report the incident to the police and keep a log of any (hopefully there won't be any) calls.  You probably are not the only one this creep is calling.

Definitly call the police, they should be able to get records from phone company, have had the experiance that someone wanted to extort some money from me, and the cops caught the guy from cellphone records [thumbsup]

Sorry, but now I have to laugh...its a phone chain

Next victim: "Hello?"
caller: "I hope you don't mind, I got your number from Derby"
Next victim: yes?
caller: [moan.  pant.  moan.]

Seems to all make sense now...
Please tell me it took just a few moments to realize it wasn't me on the other end of the line.  I need SOMEONE to think I'm freaky like that.  ;)

I know for a fact that you can set up your cell phone to reject 'blocked id' calls.  A girl I used to know did that, people would have to dial *82 before dialing her cell number if their ID was blocked.  As far as 'unknown id'  I'm not sure about that one.  I'm assuming your cell is your private cell and not through work?  Get Corey to call and make you an authorized user on your account so you can make changes.

Every cell phone I've ever had came with the option to assign a special ring tone to unidentified calls, or to send them directly to voicemail without having the phone ring.

i know on my phone i can set it up to refuse any unknown call.  it will just show up as missed but will not ring.

just go to the "call settings"  then to "reject list" then it should be somewhere around there.  you may just have to find the owners manual for your phone and see what it can do.

Our phone contract is up in a couple of weeks anyway.  I guess I have some new shopping features to look for!

Good news!  No phone calls tonight...so far.  But my man is home tonight.  So if the phone rings, I'm making him answer it.   ;)

At the very least you can set up No phone number calls to just not ring.
