Video is sort of lengthy but I think it's a good cause. I hope it gains some traction Title: Re: Kony 2012 Post by: Howley on March 07, 2012, 03:26:21 PM http://ilto.wordpress.com/2006/11/02/the-visible-problem-with-invisible-children/ (http://ilto.wordpress.com/2006/11/02/the-visible-problem-with-invisible-children/)

Title: Re: Kony 2012 Post by: Mac_48 on March 07, 2012, 09:26:48 PM meh... I know that their main focus is a bit off but it is stuff like this that will help bring the issues of Uganda to light. I'm not saying that this specific organization knows everything or even that they should lead support efforts over there, just that it's good to see awareness in young people gaining traction. I know that problems in Uganda have been around for a long time and that the video is a bit sensationalist but that's what usually get's the ball rolling. I do think that 10,000 kids is still alot and that continuing to try to stop the LRA is a good cause but I do agree with the article that was posted and that there are a huge amount of problems that could be helped with an organized effort instead of trying to throw money at it.
Title: Re: Kony 2012 Post by: Le Pirate on March 08, 2012, 12:06:18 PM Well...it's gained traction...
Overall, I'm not sure the approach of groups like IC do much good. According to the link Howley posted, they do the opposite of good (though I haven't vetted any of those claims, and don't plan on it). I'm more of the opinion that, if groups like IC-or christian missions groups, or anyone else-want to do the most good, it's probably best to cordinate with Africa. It's their continent. Let them at it. Though they missed most of the Kony action, since the AU formed their own security council, they've been doing an alright job...sometimes a little over their head, but a decent job none the less. You want to raise money by showing videos about Kony. Cool. Collect it, and call up Africa (the AU) and maybe let them use it as they see fit. It is their playground. Title: Re: Kony 2012 Post by: RAT900 on March 16, 2012, 11:09:44 PM As far as I am concerned anyone under 25 is a child soldier...wars should be fought by people my age...because it is usually my age group that starts them anyway
old people are otherwise fairly useless, they tie-up wealth from going to the next generation (who needs it more than we do) by living to absurd ages,,,,, and a war fought by geezers in camo's hiked up to their armpits would be fabulous entertainment for the kids I am compassion-weary of the African continent....please let those folks evolve a workable social system on their own....yes Darwinism is an ugly ugly thing to witness but over the greater passage of time it can yield laudable results...and that savage passage might just happen faster if we quit dabbling if you want to feel important and good about yourself walk down to the end of the make the beast with two backsing street and visit the old lady eating dog food and buy her a decent meal or take her food shopping go work in a local soup kitchen or orphanage, visit a VA Hospital if you're feeling fearless,,,,go liberate the slave girls in any of the dozens of Asian or Russian brothels in all the major cities I realize that immediate/local acts of charity don't have the glam factor or the cache' the point is.....you don't have to reach halfway around the world to find tragedy, injustice, suffering, child exploitation etc etc it is all right here under our collective make the beast with two backsing noses ....maybe helping out in our own patch just doesn't have the right level of vanity-drenching drama for some folks and doesn't have tee-shirts and buttons and stuff that allows someone to advertise their moral superiority but it might just help the old lady that you drive past while sobbing about african kids with guns ...... the one who's walking home from the grocery store with a rolling wire basket full of K-N-L-Ration rant off, mods feel free to delete Title: Re: Kony 2012 Post by: Howley on March 17, 2012, 12:43:41 AM Poetry Rat, poetry. I can't remember if that beah guy was speaking or not but I bought his book there I pointed out that on the wall at the VA we honor the boys and girls (some as young as 13) who volunteered to serve during WWII my point wasn't well recieved |
