Hey Guys,

I'm trying to gather up everything for my fork swap project, and all that's left is the clip-ons.  I've been searching for answers, but most of the threads I'm finding are pretty old with a lot of dead links and products that are no longer available.

So anyway, what I'm working with is an '07 695.  I have a pair of Showa forks from a 748.  At least I'm pretty sure they're from a 748; I bought them like two years so I can barely remember.  I also got the appropriate front axle with the holes in it for the adjustment access.  And finally I have a Cycle Cat 53mm upper triple clamp.

So, I think all that's left is some clip-ons.  I'd like to get something with a decent rise so I can mount them under the upper TC without the bars being super low, but I'm not really finding anything.  I like the idea of these SpeedyMoto Tall Boys (http://www.speedymoto.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=08-0250BLK&Category_Code=TB (http://www.speedymoto.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=08-0250BLK&Category_Code=TB)), but it looks like they only come in 50mm.

Anyone know of a setup that will work?  I've also been reading that the coffin-style reservoirs can have interference issues as well, so that's another concern.

Woodcraft make a riser clip on.

So does Cycle Cat, and they're a sponsor.

Motowheels make a set with a riser, and they're a sponsor as well.

Rizoma has a riser set but they're spendy.

Monsterparts.com has a spacer for the coffin reservoirs that will allow them to work with clip ons.

Don't forget, you'll need a .5mm spacer for the lower triple in order for the forks to fit properly. Easily remedied with an aluminum can.

Here's one I prepared earlier.

I used 53mm Woodcraft clipons, mounted above the stock (bored) top triple.

The forks are 998 ones.  They're significantly longer than the stock 695 ones, so putting the clipons ablve the triple doesn't significantly affect the steering geometry.  I recently reanodised the caps.

One thing I found with the Woodcraft clipons is that you really have to trim them a little at the back, otherwise they hit your tank and limit your turning circle.  I did this with a file.

Also getting the stock coffin reservoirs to fit is challenging.  I made up some crescent shaped spacers to go under the brake and clutch lever mounts, so that they don't hit the clipon clamp section.

You can also buy Woodcraft and Speedymoto clipons with rise, and that lets you put them under the triple.

Lower triple on your Monster is 54mm & SBK forks are 53mm.  So, you'll need a 0.5mm shim...

That's what I was thinking; do most people just get a couple strips of aluminum to wrap around the forks?  Seems simple enough.  I don't think it's worth replacing the lower TC, steering stem, and all that stuff!

I cut open a beer can last night to see how thick the material was, and it was only about 0.004".  That's like 0.1mm.  So do you use a few layers to get to 0.5mm?

For reference, 0.5mm is about 0.020", which is 24 gauge aluminum.  I might actually be able to scrounge up some of that from work.  I'll see what I can find out!

Remember: that's .1mm per side. If you wrap a beer can shim all (or most of) the way around a fork, that's .2mm (one shim section on either side.) Two layers of beer can aluminum gets you to roughly .4mm, which is plenty close enough for government work.

Alright.  One step forward and 5 steps back!  I found a piece of scrap aluminum at work that's exactly 0.5mm thick!  So I can make my shims out of that no problem.

BUT!  I also just realized I have the wrong upper triple clamp!  I have the pre-2002 version, which has the smaller steer stem nut.  So this triple clamp is not gonna work.  (This is what I have: http://www.cyclecat.com/billet/triple-clamps/item/97 (http://www.cyclecat.com/billet/triple-clamps/item/97)).  I'll probably be putting it up for sale on here in the next few days once I figure out what the plan is for this thing.

So now I need a different triple clamp as well.  Are there any options out there for post-2002 with 53mm forks?  I'm not finding much.  This Cycle Cat DTC8 (http://www.cyclecat.com/billet/triple-clamps/item/113 (http://www.cyclecat.com/billet/triple-clamps/item/113)) looks perfect but they don't specify the fork diameter so I'm assuming it's the stock 50mm.

Otherwise I guess I could just forget about clip-ons and bore out the stock upper TC.  I've heard of a few people doing that, but are there any structural concerns with removing that material?  Or is the consensus that it's pretty harmless?
