Title: Too few miles?
Post by: Lion604 on March 07, 2012, 10:11:21 PM
Hey Everyone,
I'm looking at first bikes and would love to get a monster. I'm slated to check one out this weekend that is an '08 695 with 153 miles on it. That's not a typo. It appears the owner bought it and basically let it sit in his garage for 4 years...

Anyways, the price is right and it looks as good as you'd expect with only 153 miles but I was wondering if there's anything in particular that I should look out for. I know the bike will still need to be broken in. I spoke to a mechanic and he recommended that should I purchase it that I have all the fluids changed which is a given.

Is there anything else I'm missing or that I should anticipate?

Unless properly stored, the tank will be swollen.  change belts.  change tires.

How much is the current owner asking?

That may determine whether it's worth it or not. The bike will need a major service, mostly because it's been sitting for that long. As well as other things that may be overlooked, like changing the fork oil or a rusted out chain.

I doubt the valves are outta whack, so that will save you few dollars on parts and labor.

And definitely new tires.

I would expect to pay around 1k or more for a complete check up (by a mechanic) with replacement of belts and such, plus tires.

The tank may definitely be swollen, that may be a deciding factor as well.

1k+ on top of the asking price may not be worth it, IMHO.

Let's see you should do
As mentioned new Brake and clutch fluid - $5-10
Engine Oil and filter - $45
As mentioned new Fork oil - $20
Probably shock oil - Needs to be sent out to a shop ~$125
As mentioned new tires ~$250
As mentioned new belts - $80
Probably new battery ~$75+

Even if you do the work on your own - that bill above is probably pushing towards $500 if you get decent tires on and not including the shock work, nor labor/shipping. If you can do general work, then just add the cost of the tire change, $80 for a set off the bike here, and the shock work and you're set.

If you need a shop to do all your work... yeah you'll be getting close to $1k by the end of if dependent on the shops rate.
