I am trying to patch my two month old tire. The mushroom plug is roughly 5/16 diameter while the screw that screwed me is ~1/8. I figure I need to ream the hole and was going to use a 1/4" drill bit. Anyone with experience?
IMO, I wouldn't trust a patched tire unless it was as a spare (on an adventure run to BFE).
But, yes, the hole needs to be reamed. The smaller the better. I use a pointed drill bit that's roughly 3/16 in diameter - get the tip of the patch plug through the hole, grab it with side cutters and pull till it's flush.

have u tried running a patch tire? for a long time? i've known too many who've done it no prblems, including through track days and cross country trips.
my last tire (i forgot how may but over 20,000 miles i think or near that PR2) had over 4 patches.
it wasnt as bad as my friends PP, which had over 3 plugs 2 patches, and then had about 15 of those doodoo looking rubber things (there was a 4 inch gash across his tire) the final gash really put an end to the tire, but before that it was just fine.
Thanks, project was on hold and can now go forward. My last patched rear lasted an additional !0,000. miles though I did not patch it myself. For $6.50 I am going to venture it.
patch or plug? plug is from the outside, patch is on the inside path is better for the tire, but in the grand scheme of things, if it works, it works.
The question was reamer size for mushroom plug from inside.

As a former auto tech, yes I've patched plenty of tires - motorcycle tires included. However, knowing engineers in the tire industry and talking to them, I wouldn't trust a patched tire being pushed hard on the road or the track.
Really, it depends on where the patch is. IMO I'd rather spend the cash on new skins.
As a side note...20K on pilot road 2's?? Seriously?

Maybe if it was a plug and you were getting into serious pushing. Otherwise, i wouldnt sweat it too much. I trust a patch much more than i trust a plug. but for most peoples riding (including canyon carving) an inside patch will hold just fine. of course where the patch is really matters too. I wish i had a pic of my freinds tire from the inside. Sometiems you get a nail in your tire when its less than 1,000 miles which sucks, i wouldnt feel right replacing it unless it was unpatchable. What i dont trust is that slime stuff.
and yes, im pretty sure it was 20k atleast. it was defintely over 15. im on PR3s right now and lost track of mileage ever since my service records got destroyed. :\
