Title: Need shifting/ manual help...im at the end of my rope
Post by: topher on March 11, 2012, 05:00:29 PM
ok, so Im really really tapped out on this...First, let me introduce myself...Im Toipher, from NH.  I have an 01 Monster dark 620...my buddy rode it last fall, and "dropped it" going real slow.  minor cosmetic damage.  well, after riding it, the shifter seems really funny, it up-shifts just fine, rides great, but when you go to downshift, it kinda gets hung up in fourth gear, the shifter goes "soft" if you can imagine what I mean.  no more upshifting, no more downshifting...it just kinda feels completely disengaged.  so after months of research and trying to understand whats going on in there, Ive come to the conclusion that something in the "harpoon" is out of adjustment.  Ive opened the side case, and can see everything is in place, nothing bent, but I do see a flat-head screw with a set-nut on what appears to be an adjuster.  from what i can gather, and some of what Ive read, the bike needs to be in second gear, and then somehow "timed" to get the shift pawl centered on the drum....what I am trying to find is anyone with some pics and perhaps a spec of where the harpoon is supposed to fall in relation to the mark scribed on it....I cant find a manual to save my life, and anytime Ive tried downloading a "free" shop manual, I get a computer that gets angry at me and stops downloading...(whole different problem...LOL)  does anyone have at least the couple pages and specs and instructions on how to "time" my shifter?  thanks so much, and love the site!!!
