Title: Advice on new exhaust for a 695, anyone?
Post by: Cerberus53 on June 24, 2008, 05:32:31 AM
Anyone had any experience and/or advice for a newbie thinking of fitting a new exhaust to a 695 here in Oz?

The good news is my dealer/NFI/Ducati have all come to the party with my engine discoloration problem and have agreed to fit the DP ECU under warranty to fix the lean running in addition to repainting the heads/exterior of the cylinder barrels.  I am very tempted to take the opportunity to upgrade the exhaust while the bike is in the workshop.

The obvious, if probably most expensive, thing to do is to bite the bullet and pay for the Termis, but others have suggested Staintunes.  I like the sound of both (although I haven't seen or heard them on an actual 695) and my neighbours would probably prefer the Staintunes.

Apart from aesthetics, any reasons to prefer one over the other that anyone knows of? And are there any other suggestions out there?

WOW, they're giving you a DP ECU? Personally I wouldn't want to bugger that relationship up, which staintunes may do. I am far from an expert on these things but I would be concerned that if you went for termis now you could end up wearing more of the cost of the ECU than you were expecting.

Six95 is probably the guys to talk to about the Termis (perhaps send him a PM)

Sounds like a good outcome on the heads discoloration too.

I would go the same a s Matty I think MIVVI or something like that, they sound awesome, by memory I don’t think he let to much coin go to get them either  [thumbsup]

PS: thanks Goldfish, that is a cool little trick that makes the hyperlinks so much better!

Cerberus, nice name mate, I have a sculpture of one of your heads on a wall.

I did not wait to see if my heads would discolour so I installed the ECU, airbox and pipes with only 70kms on the ODO.
Cant really say much for the performance increase (due to minimal comparison) but I do recall alot of the low down chugging/vibration almost disappearing (as well as that funny clicking sound from the airbox).
What are you going to do about the airbox? Cut it or leave it?
The open one that came in the kit was rough as guts. They must get the closed version and cut the top of with a very coarse blade.

I have the low mount termi's - Low or high is your pref..
I like the sound and the baffles are out as well - IMO: its a low rumble that's is not too offensive.
The other thing I like is the CF, its stays constantly luke warm.

If you are in Syd, maybe come to Bar italia. There is always a range of sounds to sample.

Thanks for all the responses.  Plenty of food for thought.  I am leaning towards the Termis (low mount - slight personal preference for the trad look) but could be swayed if the cost difference is too great once I get the final quotes.

Six95, I hadn't thought about the airbox issue.  I guess I assumed, since it's part of the DP kit, that you needed the extra airflow from the open airbox to match the DP ECU/more open pipes. But no, not true?

By pure coincidence, I may be in the vicinity of Bar Italia this weekend - up for a quick taste of the big smoke.  I'll keep an eye, or rather an ear, out for some samples.

Anyway, have to make the decision this weekend before she goes into the workshop next week.

PS.  Cerberus was the name of my first ever ride - a 1978 RD350 in very poor tune and a tendancy to behave like the beast of legend.  And no, there have not, sadly, been 52 others since.

As you will have the DP ECU I would look outside DP. There are some real bargains to be had particularly out of the states due to AUD. I would not be paying retail from a local supplier.
( Like I can talk, I just cored my cans because I am too tight  :-[)

True, but then there is the Instant Gratification factor... and the goodwill of my dealer who has after all done the right thing on the engine discoloration and the DP ECU.

Each to their own. Goodwill? Aren't they repairing a fault? I am not suggesting they are not looking after you but if the bike was not running lean you would have no dramas though  ???
Instant gratification I do understand though!

Perhaps I am being a bit easy on them, but judging by other people's stories I've been lucky.  They accepted there was a problem without complaint and have offered me a proper solution without having to be dragged into it.  Still, in the meanwhile I'm taking your advice and checking out the options on the other side of the Pacific, just in case.  [thumbsup]

Hey Cerberus,

just popped in to have a read about your exhausts shopping list.
Firstly fantastic result from Frasers/NFI about the discolouration issue. Best result I think I have heard from them with this issue.
And a DP ECU to boot  [thumbsup]so what have you checked out by way of pipes other than Termi's.
Click on my flickr link in my signature and have a look at mine they are MIVV low mounts shorty carbon.
I got them because of $$$ but also because they are not termi's, I like the rounds not the oval and they are shorter than anything else I had seen.
have a look at www.pjsparts.com they have great prices and excellent service.

Enjoy the shopping, whatever you pick it's gonna sounds just sweet.

cheers
Matty...

Matty, fantastic looking pipes - and the rest of the bike.  Congratulations.  Thanks too for the pointer to pjsparts.

Ok. List I have looked at is looking like this:

Termis, Staintunes, Arrows, and now MiVV (plus all sorts of other things that flash by when you put monster 695 exhaust into the search thingy).

As the old chinese saying has it, be careful what you wish for...  With all the suggestions I have been getting here and elsewhere, plus what the interweb has to offer, I am finding it harder to decide the longer I spend thinking about it.  Termis have all that classic Ducati association (a good thing for some, less so for those who want something a bit different) and I like the noise, but they cost a fortune. The high-mount Arrows look better than the low mounts I have seen IMO, but in general I prefer the more trad low mount look in the little monsters, and they are not being given away either. I like the polished stainless look of the  Staintunes. They are (relatively) less expensive. They sound fantastic, baffles in  or out, and I guess I could claim the warm inner glow that comes from supporting local industry . The short round MiVVs are brilliant to look at, and judging by the videos on the manufacturer's site, they sound pretty good too...  And that's before I start really digging.  Arrgh!

I had given myself till Monday morning to choose - when the bike goes to the doctor's for over a week, what with all the repainting etc. That tends to favour the choices that are available at short notice, but if I convince myself of something that I would be better off ordering in, I suppose I could force myself to wait.  Someone else want to decide?

I got mine as new-old stock and don't think that they are 'worth' retail, the finish of the carbon on the can is quite poor in comparison to the German stuff that is on the rest of it...and when I took the side panels (stock) down to a painter to be clear-coated (or re-coated) he also said how pitted and thin the clear coat of the termignoni was - but they were produced 4 years ago - things may have changed!

Is it Sil or Mivv that is the 'under-brand' for Termignoni?

What are your thought on Arrow?

My advice would be to not rush the decision. Get the pipes that you want when you know what you want. If you can't decide (given adequate time) then and only then look at what is cheapest and/or easiest.

Having said that it took me ages to decide and even then I had to be led by another.

It's been a long time coming, but all good at last.  Cylinders and heads are repainted, DP ECU installed (all under warranty - thanks Ducati, and Gecko Canberra), open air box and shiny new staintunes fitted (at my expense), everthing tuned and rear suspension adjusted...  Folks, this is a new bike!!  Apart from the noise  [thumbsup], no more hesitation at small throttle openings, and it may be my imagination, but it feels like the extra couple of theoretical horses that come with the ECU are pulling twice as hard as their colleagues.  Fingers crossed for some sunny weather on the weekend and a chance to have a proper test!

After Hearing Matty screeming down the straight at the creek the other day, id be going for the MiVV the sound was so sweet there were others with termi's not as nice a sound Go the MiVV IMO. [thumbsup]
