Title: s4 running hotter
Post by: Nero-92 on March 15, 2012, 04:28:23 PM
My s4 seems to be running hot now at least according to the digital temp gauge all the hoses have pressure in them when squeezed my own experience with water cooled motorcycles is very limited but with cars if there was problems with the thermostat the car ran cool would this be the same for the s4 or should I be looking elsewhere and if so where any help would be appreciated. the bike doesn't use water and I've just done a 600 ml round trip to Belfast and no water loss I don't know what the unit of temp is on the duc but the number 207 sitting at 80-90 mph on the motorway.

If you're running 207° the temp must be reading in Fahrenheit. That's a very easy temperature to reach around town, but on the highway you should be running around 180°F, plus or minus a few depending on how warm it is outside.

The thermostat should open and the the top radiator hose should begin getting warm at 140° (assuming it opens at the same temp as does my 998, and as did my 996). I think the radiator fan comes on somewhere around 212-214°, but I'm not 100% on that.

How's the radiator look? Do you have any crushed fins, or damage?

The rad looks fine no crushed fins the top hose gets warm around 140 the fan comes on around 210 I took of the temp sensors sprayed the plugs with electro cleaner and put it back together again hopfully take it for a run on sunday and hopfully that cures it if not the only thing left to check is the stat or a blockage me thinks.

My S4 usually runs about 110 degF above ambient, so if it's 70 degF the motor runs at about 180.
I can't imagine it's 90 degF near Belfast this time of year (if ever).

Make sure it's full of a 50/50 mix of coolant/water.

I've heard of water pump impellers occasionally losing blades, but it's not a common thing.
If you have lost a blade, you *must* find it, as it can block passages...
...or find it's way back to your newly installed impeller to break a blade off of it.  :(

Sounds like your thermostat is working properly, and fans on at around 210 is correct.

Speedog if never would be more like the thing and I've been runnig 100% coolant I take it this isn't recommended if so I'll change that to 50-50 and if that dosen't sort it I'll check the impeller cheers for the pointers.

100% is a BIG no-no! 70% at most, and that's Antarctica!  ;) 50/50 with distilled water.

Yep.  Anti freeze (ethylene glycol) is a poor heat conductor compared to water.  Pure anti freeze will also freeze at about 10oF.  Double loose You want a 50 50 mix for both cooling and freeze protection.  Polyglycol coolants transfer heat better and freeze at lower temps, but you need to thoroughly  clean a system that had ethylene glycol in it.

Thanks for the help changed to 50-50 coolant water mix took it for a quick spin and it seems to be running a lot cooler but I'll take it for a longer run tomorrow and I'll know for sure thanks again for all your imput and I'll let you know how I get on tomorrow.

Ok lads thanks again for the replies and info I took the s4 for a trip to dingle which is a 70 mile round trip and when cruising at 70-80 mph the temp was pegged 180 f isn't just great to have access to a world of tech help and info again many tanks.
