Title: Oil Pressure sender threads stripped?
Post by: Real Recognize Real on March 22, 2012, 04:30:31 PM
Oil is leaking from the hole of the oil pressure sender unit. I could have overtightened the sender unit when I replaced a previous faulty unit. the new sender unit will mate with the threads but it continues to spin no matter how long I try to tighten it. I inspected the threads of the hole - the top half of the threads are relatively smooth while the bottom half seems normal.
If the threads are stripped, what are my options to repair it? Helicoil kit, tap and die? This will be my 1st attempt to repair a stripped thread, so hopefully it's not too difficult.

Helicoil or Time Sert are your best choices short of a new side cover, assuming the thread for the sending unit is available.

Would temporarily stopping the lieak with some Teflon tape be a problem?

I believe the thread size is M10x1.0 but what length should I choose - any length longer than the thread length of the pressure sender? Also, can this repair be completed with the installed cover or should I remove  it?

No reason to go longer, you don't want to block the oil passage.  I would remove the cover so you don't have to worry about chips.

If the sending unit should pop out you will be instantly riding in a large puddle of oil, not good.  I might try that to get out of the desert before the buzzards got me, other than that, no.

+1 on the Time Sert...  I installed a M22x1.5x15mm for my oil pre-screen filter and the install took around 30 minutes, stronger than stock.

Here is a link to one of the cheaper kits you can find:

Thanks for the link. [thumbsup] I just placed an order so hopefully, the bike should be running by early next week.

Just make sure that the insert length does not protrude past the aluminum block.  The last few threads of the insert "cold roll" into place, thus, if the insert is too long it will not "lock" into the block.  You should also apply RED loctite to the EXTERNAL threads of the insert during installation.  This, coupled with the "cold roll" gives the insert an excellent lock into the case.

Ok gotcha. The inserts that come with the kit are 15mm which seemed a little long so I ordered one of each size.

Update,

Just finished installing the time-sert kit with the help of my partner in crime. For future reference, the 15mm insert worked perfectly. [thumbsup]
