A couple of times this week, when engaging 1st, it just cuts the engine. Took several tries before allowing me into gear. Then going down the road, it would suddenly cut out briefly, then back in again. Twice in a 10m trip it cut out completely at around 70-80mph, I had to coast to the side, then re-start her.
Seems to start & idle fine, revving ok, nothing changed / modded recently, 2 different sources of fuel in the tank. No O2 sensor issues as they have been removed (last year due to boom tubes).
No error codes showing on the dash at any time. Could it be electrical, possibly sidestand kill switch if its cutting out while stationary as soon as a gear is engaged?
My money would be on the sidestand switch for sure. Several threads on the issue re checking/bypassing if necessary.
Check battery connections... Could be loose wire. Had similar thing happen
Thanks guys, I'll follow up on your suggestions.
Checked most of the connections at the week-end, couldn't find anything loose, and bike seemed to be ok.
Went to it this morning, for the first 6 or 7 tries to engage 1st or 2nd from stand-still, it cut out immediately.
Tried lowering / raising the sidestand a couple of times, eventually it went into gear without cutting out, and ride to work was fine.
Does this still sound electrical, if so, any clues as to where to look? Seems strange that its so intermittent, with the bike stationary, and engine is running fine, no loss of power, etc?
Bypass the switch and see what happens.
Hi Howie,
Can you explain how I'd go about bypassing, or is there a thread out there which would do this?
cheers.
Locate the switch on your sidestand. Follow the wires and you will come to a connector. Disconnect the connector. On the side going to the bike you will see two wires. With a suitable piece of wire bridge those wires. The computer will now think your sidestand is up all the time.
There is a wiring diagram in the back of your manual or you can go here: http://www.ducati.com/services/maintenance/index.do (http://www.ducati.com/services/maintenance/index.do)
Is your bike still under warranty?
Hi Howie,
just seen your post, but basically did this last night. Couldn't undo the connector but dismantled the switch mechanism, it was full of gunk, etc inside, and looked very suspect!
Ended up cutting the wires to remove it, soldering the 2 together, and that seems to have done the trick :)
Many thanks for your advice, much appreciated!
Hello everyone, I know this is an old thread but it sounds like the same problem that I'm having with my M1100, except for it dying when I first put it it gear, my bike only cuts out when rev'ed up around 4500 & above. I have friends monster that I've been switching parts to see if it corrects the problem but so far no luck. so far I have switched the TPS, Imobilizer antenna, fuel pump module, by-passed engine kill switch, I haven"t swaped the crankshaft sensor because I noticed that it still showed rpm's on the dash when the motor cuts off so I figure the sensor is doing it's job correctly. before reading this thread I was thinking it was either the ecu or the dash (the wiring diag shows one of the wires from the eng. kill switch runs thru dash).
I'm going to try by-passing the kick-stand switch to see if that helps but wanted to see if anybody has any idea what else it can be? I almost forgot, it has no check engine light &/or error code.
Thanks for any help given,
P. S. I hope this isn't thread hi-jacking, I'm a newbie, please forgive me if it is
Yes try that. A paper clip and some electrical tape will do the trick. There is also the clutch lever switch that can give trouble. Another thing is to check your side stand bolts in case they are loose. If they are loose the sidestand switch can move and shut off the motor with a bit of vibration.
I by-passed the kickstand switch & it works great! Thanks for the reply & thanks to the forum, I had pretty much given up! After all the testing and swaping parts, I think I would have committed suicide if I would have had to pay the dealer to diagnose the bad switch! [thumbsup]
