Title: Slow oil leak from left side of the bike
Post by: Vishwacorp on April 16, 2012, 06:30:43 PM
Hello,

I noticed today that oil seems to be leaking slowly from around the bolt in the middle of the following picture. I figured I should first check to see if the bolt is torqued properly but in the meantime, I'm also posting it up here to see if anyone has any advice on anything else I should check?

The bike is a 2005 Monster 620 with 15,000 miles on the clock.

Thanks,

Ankur

Clean the area and coat it with an aerosol powder spray.  Go for a ride.  The stain in the powder will lead you to the leak.  Make sure not to over tighten that bolt.

Looks like it may be a weep from the front of the alternator cover, just like I had. Seemed to be from that black sensor, but it was where the alternator wires come out of the rubber grommet.

10 Nm on that bolt.  If that doesn't cure it wait until you're due an oil change if you can.  You'll have to drop the oil to remove the cover.  Total job should take about 4 hours but you'll have to let the silicone cure for a full day before final torque.  Most of the time will be spent cleaning.
