Title: leaky faceshields
Post by: sejman on April 18, 2012, 07:05:59 PM
Any tried and true fixes for air/wind leaks in faceshield?  I wear contacts and during rides in hot and dry Texas summers even a small amount of air leaking can cause uncomfortably dried out eyes after a while.  I figure some very thin/soft foam weatherstripping stuck on the inside of the faceshield where it mates with the helmet might work...

Are you sure it's not the venting from the helmet?  Most helmets vent to the faceshield.

An interim solution if it's really causing you large issues is to wear sunglasses under your shield.  that will block the air directly hitting your face.

My helmets allow me to adjust the shield for a tighter closed position.

If you don't have a good rubber lip, it might be time for a new helmet?

The problem doesn't seem to improve/worsen with the venting options open/closed. Both of my helmets have this issue. I guess I can experiment with some foam and see what happens. Maybe its time for laser eye correction ;D

No helmet is sealed - are you using/do you have a chin curtain? IF not, a lot of air is blowing up from the opening. With, there will be some, but will be reduced.

I have an AGV S-4 and a Sparx S-07.  Neither are high-end helmets.  I actually prefer the cheaper Sparx helmet...it fits my head better.  I'll try the chin skirt next, and make sure I keep contact lens drops with me...

Did you try out wearing sunglasses yet?

No - I have a dark smoke shield on right now so that would make things too dark.  I can try that with a clear shield...

ya know, safety glasses work nice too, and you can get them clear... or amber, whichever you choose

You might want to take a look at a new prescription and/or new brand of contacts, preferably soft. I had the same problem when I first started riding, and when I got a new prescription and new brand of contacts, the problem went away.
