Title: Scraped flat spot into header, how bad?
Post by: Nomad on April 18, 2012, 10:07:31 PM
Well I'm an idiot and used too steep of an angle when I got my bike out of a uhaul trailer.  Now I scraped a flat spot into my header.  Does this effect anything, or just look like ass?  [bang] [bang] [bang] [bang] [bang]

Doubt you will notice anything unless its a massive ding - I did this on a tall kerb when I had a TL1000S and all it did was look crappy  :'(

Look up the "ice trick' if it really bugs you.

Short version is that you removed the header part in question, fill with water and stick it in the freezer. The expansion of the water as it solidifies will push out a good bit of the flat spot.

There's a little more detail to it - but that's the gist.

Sounds like the bike's totaled. Best solution is to just give the POS to a family member and find another one ;)

Thanks Sad Panda, I've seen that one and plan to do it this winter, or just replace the header.  I'm mostly concerned if it will effect performance in any way.  I just go the bike tuned up in every way by a great mechanic, then threw it in the trailer, and make the beast with two backsed it up before I even road it, so I"m a little irritated.

It'll probably be jsut fine. yeah, you've created a section of exhaust with a reduced cross section - but the % decrease probably isn't dramatic unless you really hammered it into something more like a semi-circle as opposed to a circle with a small chord cut off. Plenty mosters with stock headers running around with flat spots.
