Title: Lowering gauges on IMA triples??
Post by: Nomad on April 20, 2012, 09:11:44 AM
I've got some fork collars and am in the process of lowering my headlight and gauges.  I've run into a little bit of a snag.

I was just going to screw in my gauges to the bottom of my IMA triple, big problem.  The only threads are on the top of the triple, and the bottom hole of the triple is a smaller diameter, so those stock bolts can't thread in.

What are some possible options?

The only thing I can think of is getting a long bolt that small enough to go all the way through from the top of the triple, where it wouldn't be threaded on anything, and then use a nut to secure my gauges from the bottom.  But then the screw might rattle around a little since it wont be tight in the threads.

Suggestion's/ideas welcome!

Couldn't you just drill & tap the underside of the holes?

i'm looking for immediate solutions that will last a summer... I think my idea has worked, but they nuts are hanging on by one or two threads, it will be an interesting summer... and now i need new brake lines.

Ok, that seems to have worked, now what do you guys who have lowered gauges do with the extra slack in your speedo cable?

i bend two tabs of steel, one end bolts into the m4 hole on bottom of triple the other sandwiches between a purchased m5(ithink) bolt and the nut like device that the guages use originally.

drill/tap is best idea.

I might do that over the winter, my idea seems to have worked pretty decently.  But now I need new brake lines, and I already have custom ones from Spiegler, they are bent all over the gauges, will work for now until I order some new ones.  I'm having a hard time keeping my brake lines and speedo cable off the tire.  Since I have the SBK forks the little metal cage for the speedo cable can't be mounted on my forks.  Right now I've got a zip tie on there as a temporary solution, but it obviously isn't ideal....

Old school mechanical speedo, I take it?   Try rotating it around at the axle to loop some down there.  Being careful of course it won't get caught by the wheel.
