Title: Thinking of trying out a SuperSport...should I?
Post by: 118811 on April 22, 2012, 02:07:09 PM
I have owned a  98 M900 for three years now...its has been a great bike.

But, I have always wanted a SBK ...749-1198 anything in between.  Problem is my bank account doesn't support this "want" nor does my riding needs.
Mostly commuting 13 miles & a lot of 35-45 mph riding.
So I have been thinking more about a 2000-2004?  SS Duc

Thought I would get some opinions from the forum.

Tell me your thoughts...

Thanks [beer]

The SS is a great bike...and more like an SBK in riding position and the fact it is faired.

I loved my Terblanche 750 on the track...

That said I'd keep the Monster for your riding needs.

Why...riding position or engine performance etc?

I was fortunate to own both at the same time and ending up using the SS for the twisties and track only.  The monster is absolute superior for commuting, especially in slow traffic.

I've been thinking of the same thing...mainly for the track and weekend hill country twisties. Are there any years to stay away from, or years to really search out?  I can pick up a '93 for under $3K that needs a little TLC.

You really want the model with the fully adjustable front forks and aluminum swing arm.
This is a 93 SS with a 750 F1 seat and fairing.

That is really cool looking...kind of a cross between a sport classic and superbike. There is one for sale near me that needs some work...engine runs but smokes a little while cold (maybe valve guide seals?) and carbs need rebuilding. looks very clean, less than 20k miles. might be a fun project and track bike. If I can get a good deal on it I might just grab it.

The early SS has a problem with the frame breaking near the steer tube and head studs breaking.  Neither problem is a deal breaker if the price is right.

Now, this bike just doesn't do any thing for me :'(
It looks like it was pieced together with spare parts...no flow
probably fun to ride though; but not as a daily driver.

FYI...Honolulu has no track

which for some reason seem to be rarer than a Superlight, but have no substance warranting the seemingly higher asking price over some of the Superlights out there...

I like the 800's

The short fairings look even better to me.

How hard would it be to convert a older classic Monster (like my '01 900Sie) into something like this?  I'm kind of already heading in that direction (clip-ons, rearsets, chin spoiler)?  A "tuckable" worthy fairing seems like one of the big obstacles...

Title: Re: Thinking of trying out a SuperSport...should I?

It's my understanding that the SuperSport has a SuperSport frame while your monster has an 888 Superbike frame with a SuperSport 900 engine in it. The plastics and tank and other things are not going to fit your monster. But you can get a nice cafe racer look out of it the monster if that's what you want. That's been done. But I wouldn't try to do a conversion to a SuperSport. It's better to just buy one if that's what you want.

i've always foudn the ss models of the ducati not that great looking they may be great track bikes but they are early designs and don't nearly have the same good looks as their 916 and later superbikes.  yes they are different but that difference is well a big one.

Title: Re: Thinking of trying out a SuperSport...should I?
Post by: MendoDave on April 30, 2012, 12:37:26 PM
They weren't designed to be a Superbike for racing. They were designed to be a sport bike to be ridden on the street. It just happens that lots of people buy race bikes and ride them on the street.

I don't mean literally converting to a Supersport - I just mean getting more of the attributes of a Supersport (riding position, wind protection) with my Monster, rather than buying another bike.  I can't justify the cost and performance of a true superbike and l like the "tinkerability" and simplicity of the air-cooled motors.  I don't think that I'm ready to get rid of the Monster just yet...and maybe someday I'll be able to have both a sport bike and revert my Monster back to a more relaxed round-towner.

Monster have been converted to full racers with bodywork from 999 style to others.
clip ons make it that ss style setup for low set riding

the ss was never raced in teh World SBK SS series. the 748 SBK was.

They were 1991 holdovers, sold in 91 and 92.  All of the US models I've seen have a 1992 date but a 1991 VIN.

Ian Falloon says about 200 full fairing blacks were sold worldwide.  About half that many with the half fairing black were sold.

They were not at all popular.

I've found that the Monsters flat, fat tank at the seat junction to be it's weakest feature for tracking and hanging off, it's difficult for my outer thigh to find an anchor point.  I've managed a few mods to get around this but the cycleworks track tank (when released) should be a more direct approach.

Damn,  you really had my hopes up.  Started with ebay then went directly to search/research mode...    Over 5 gallons capacity and steel (quite massive).  Came across a few pages on TOB which included info and pics of both an M900 and S2R with tank mounted (not sure if it was just a mock fitting).  Great for touring, of course,  but my needs would not justify the mods.  Time to break out the Bondo...

I love those supersports, 1 day I will have one. I've been looking for a 1997 model since that came with the newer stuff, I'm just too cheap to buy the ones I've seen lately. The design on them is just so appealing, when they first came out I fell in love with them & told myself that I would have one when I grew up.

my bad... just fig'd that the shape would've been about right, and since they shared the frame (depending on what year your monster is, of course)...
