Title: 2012 796 14 Tooth Sprocket Mod
Post by: gmerri on April 22, 2012, 05:44:00 PM
Confused here - I go to get my 14 T installed and the dealer says, oops part doesn't work. (DP).  They ordered the 2011 796 part and it doesn't fit. Might be because of ABS but not sure at all.

In talking to Curmudgeon, his dealer has a fit - a Driven Racing 14T on a 796.  Apparently, It works fine. The Driven part number is: 10 67 525 14 T

Anybody got insight here?

it might physically fit, but there might be a speed sensor that might get confused if a sprocket is installed?

It would have to fit the countershaft, with appropriate attachments, and correct offset/alignment.
Nothing more complicated that that.
ABS would have nothing to do with sprocket - that and speed sensors are at the wheel.

Did he tell you WHY it doesn't fit, i.e. what is different about his DP 14T vs the 15T already on the bike? Nathan at Duc Pond stated that there was no difference between the 2011 and 2012 796.

See what the service manager there has to say and get back to us. I can understand Ducati removing the DP 14T from the list of bikes it fits for 2012 because all U.S. 796's are ABS now. As you know from the demo 2011 you rode for 400 miles, the 14T really has negligible effect on the ABS function.

Do I feel a BS attack coming on from your dealer here?  ;D

Shenanigans!

There can be different fits from models - like my 2000 900 uses a different off set and it's a bit of a pain. But there's no sensors associated with the engine speed and ABS on those bikes. If you had something more fancy with the traction control there might be... but ABS just tracks wheel speed as Seevt noted.

Slide?!  ;D (Saw the thread, BTW.)

The ABS actually DOES track engine speed and I suppose retards the ignition and maybe throttle (?) as in many modern cars, but a difference of (1) tooth is considered acceptable. See http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=52528.0 (http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=52528.0) and read to the bottom.  ;)

The 14 tooth would have a minimum effect on traction control, but nothing with ABS.   When most folk are braking hard  the throttle is shut and the clutch is disengaged.  If there is an engine speed/throttle input to the ABS (might be since the same computer is used on more than one model) it wouldn't matter.

Since the 15 tooth sprocket part# is the same for 2011 and 2012 I see no reason why the 14 won't fit.  You can look it up here http://www.ducati.com/services/maintenance/index.do. (http://www.ducati.com/services/maintenance/index.do.)  If your dealer won't do it (up to them since this is not an authorized repair or service) go to plan B, buy the sprocket and do it yourself or go to another shop.  Our long time sponsor California Cycleworks carries a 14 tooth for your bike.

ABS uses valves that pulse the brakes.  ABS does not control the engine or throttle.  It may look at the engine speed.

An ABS "system" which runs through a central computer or BeCM very definitely DOES retard ignition and fly-by-wire throttle. Things have moved on from a separate valve block and ECM. Since Ducati is concerned with the effects of the engine speed, it may be safe to assume that advance curve and possibly throttle are moderated too. Not much point in applying brakes with the throttle WFO.  ;) If you are currently driving a car with some kind of traction or stability control, you may be CERTAIN that the engine is receiving instructions as the ABS deploys.

The dealer just said it wouldn't fit and was very apologetic.   I surely didn't know enough to ask intelligent questions as to why.  The short distance dealer (30 minutes) is overpriced and hard to communicate with.  The long distance and easy to deal with is 2 hrs. I'm trying to find some custom shops to access, but lack any depth here.  Got 1000 miles on the bike now so and revving higher so I can now see the diff curmudgeon was talking about as I got on the demo with the 14t and it was significantly more torque at low gears.

Sorry to hear that you're having this problem! After getting your message on Saturday I called Nathan, the Parts Manager at Duc Pond. He said he'd be happy to ship you the Driven Racing 14T which is identical to the one on my bike. Ask him to double check with Donnie but again, Nathan says nothing is different between your bike and mine. Don't be shy.  ;) They are friendly, super nice people! 540-667-3498 http://www.ducpond.com/ (http://www.ducpond.com/) You can have your nicer dealer pop it on and readjust your chain.

Had mine out today for a strafing run of my best twisties on the way to lunch and back. My 14T was fitted before I even picked up the bike; that was after riding their demo and seeing that it cried for one. As you noted, makes a significant difference, even though it's only ~ 400 RPM. Can't imagine riding this thing without it.

Maybe you've noticed that some here with S2R1K's have ridden a 796 and thought it didn't have enough steam. They did not ride one with a 14T!  ;) You are lucky that you had that demo for 400 miles.

Just go up two on the rear then if the countershaft sprocket won't fit! I went up two to 41.

Seems the 14T does fit; problem is a dealer who doesn't stock non-OEM. Out of curiosity, +2 in the rear did not require a new chain?

Don't know if this helps, but the local dealership (http://www.coloradoeuro.com/eshopprod_cat_7931-25352-25364_product_1227432.Front_Sprocket_7mm_525_-_T14_.htm) here also states that their 14T front sprockets won't work on *any* ABS-equipped Duc, not just Monsters.

Already posted, but read it again, to the bottom. Hundreds of us have done this with no issues. Would never have bought my 796 without it already fitted and my "Top 10" dealer has no issue either. http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=52528.0 (http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=52528.0)

Just spoke with the good folks at the Ducpond, very helpful.  My 14T for 2012 796ABS is on the way...
