Title: Fuel Pump
Post by: ZuluDuc35 on April 24, 2012, 12:40:03 PM
So I have been a bad Monster owner. I let my bike sit too long in storage so now I think my fuel pump is clogged or something. It will not prime when I turn the key. I don't think it is electrical, because I can hear it click and try to work. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

The click could be the relay.

Check the kill switch, and if it were me I'd check for voltage at the pump connector.

It's the black and red pair

Does the bike crank?  If not, add check your battery to the list too.

It tries to crank. Sounds like it is out of gas... Yes, I put fresh gas into it. I just put a new battery on it. Ill check the voltage before I go pulling the tank off for sure. Thanks for the advice so far. Ill post more as I work on it. Hopefully I can get it going in a day of working on it. A buddy told me to pull the fuel pump out and soak it in Pine sol and vinegar to clean it.

Sorry I didnt mention the bike earlier. It is a 03 Monster 800

Just replaced the lines and filter inside of my tank (I bought a used monster that had been sitting for several years) -- rust.

You can quickly test the pump after pulling it using a couple of wires to contact the connection with a 12 volt battery.

Might need to replace the cap gaskets too after pulling it (mine were dry rotted).

Good luck.
