Title: 2 short questions ('99 750 Dark)
Post by: memper on April 25, 2012, 07:39:30 AM
1) I have a spare set of what I believe to be stock peg assemblies. Can I safely chop off the passenger pegs and their "extensions" from the operator pegs? I believe that would have the rider pegs held on only by two bolts at the top. Safe? Stupid?

2) Anyone know the lock nut size for the heim joint that can boost or lower the rear end? I'm thinking that a good way to raise the rear a bit is to add one or two more lock nuts.

1) You can cut off the hanger section used to support the exhaust but need to retain the two upper mounting bolts. The stock rearsets are just cast and not so sturdy that I'd trust them with only the lower mounting bolts.

2) There's a limit to how far you can raise the rear without a longer threaded section for the heim joint, or a threaded spacer. You don't want to end up with too-few threads in the hoop. Remember that assembly is taking a lot of stresses during operation of the bike. Adding a couple more nuts is not the way to raise it.

So I'd be ok if I cut from my yellow lines on back. I plan on shortening the cans and making auxillary exhaust supports.

I realize that the raise limit is the width if the threaded part and that may be pushing it. I figure if I raise the rear by adding a second lock nut (i have seen it done this way before)it would only be about 1/4" or so. I dont know how much thread length is in there though.
I was hoping to find out the nut size to find it beforehand so I dont have to take it off to bring to the hardware store for matching.

I'm going to second what the Panda is saying.  Ive gone through two right side rearsets from cracking.  No drops just inferior cast that cracks after time.  As far as the rear suspension hoop heim joints,  imo,  an additional jamnut is not the answer.  Taking them loose to adjust takes some work,  but is the only right solution.

Oh yes - didn't see the line initially but that's exactly what I was trying to explain.

Adding a nut will do nothing beneficial. There's already one that's there as a lock, it's not structural/supportive. Adding a 2nd would do nothing but give you an additional item to twist on. The important measure is how much is threaded into the hoop itself. That's why folks made the threaded post spacers to raise the rear. With those you still have a sufficient amount of material into the hoop from the spacer and then the heim threads into the body of the spacer

I understand but isnt adding another nut the same as adding a short threaded spacer as you mentioned?

No. The spacer I'm talking about has both male and female threads. So you can have sufficient length going into the hoop and into the female section of the spacer as well. Think of it as a hoop extension, not a spacer.

Stacking up nuts doesn't do anything for you. The one that's there serves as a lock, not a spacer, structural member or anything else

OOOH! I get it now. Are these sold anywhere. I haven't the time to make parts...

Check ebay - might find something there. Check in (call or email) Ca-cyclework and Motowheels as well. They might have some knocking around that need a good home. Monster parts too... we any of the really Duc focused vendors.
