Title: what type of oil should i go for?
Post by: desmodoktor on April 26, 2012, 06:43:13 PM
hello, its time for my 600miles service... im planning to replace the oil and filter myself.. and have the dealer reset the computer and the rest.. (runs cheaper that way)
for my 02 m750 ive been using Motul 7100 Synthetic Oil 4T 10w40. and im happy with it..
should i use the same one for my 1100evo? from what i hear everybody is happy with it...
any advice? should i go for some other brand?! (my oil intervals are every 2000miles)  [Dolph]

if you're happy, stick with it... if you're in the U.S. and are interested in something that's on par with what you're using, and a little bit cheaper, check out Mobil 1 Racing 4T (10w-40)...

It's treated me right for a long time.

Also, plenty of threads on oil. Give the forum search a shot, should dig up a TON of info for ya.

That. There was THE oil thread that was run by a former member George (RIP) who was a lubrication engineer. The dude made this stuff for a living and had access to a lab with aaaaalll the goodies. Of the stuff on the market he favorite for a number of reasons was the mobil moto 10w-40.

It's easy to get, reasonably priced and works well for me

I thought monsters take 20w-50? I used amsoil and Lucas and have had good luck.

The spec on earlier bikes was 20-50.

I think it changed around Y2K. The change coincided with the use of plain cam bearings as opposed to the roller type.

Different years different recommendations.  Ducati went from 20W-50 to 10W-40 around 2000 or 2001.  Now they recommend 15W-50.  If you look in the owner's manual you will find a table with temperatures and oil weights.  As long as the weight is within that operating range you are good.  For example, your 2002 says 10W-40, but you can use 20W-50 as long as it is over 32oF.  You can find your owner's manual here:  http://www.ducati.com/services/maintenance/index.do
