Title: My monster build - blog or not?
Post by: Nottsbiker on April 30, 2012, 04:31:55 AM
Hi All,

It occured to me the other day whilst hiding from the almost daily rain in my shed that I've been taking pictures of the slow progress I've been making with my 900 Monster, and that it would make sense to keep it all in one place.

Now I've never done a blog before so dont know where to start - what are the best (ie free) sites to go for, and which are the easiest to use for the novice blogger?

Finally as I'm doing a slow rebuild / mild customisation do you think its worth it, or will people have seen it all before?

Cheers - Ben  [beer]

Use blogspot? I think it's under google now. For most blogs you will have to host your pictures on some other site and just image link it. Use like flickr for that.

As far as systems are concerned, Blogspot (now Blogger, owned by Google) is probably going to be the cheapest. There's no charge to use it, it's hosted by Google, and you can use a custom domain for free. WordPress is another free option, but there's certain features that you won't be able to use unless you spring for the $10/mo plan, and there's also TypePad, which starts at $9/mo and unlocks most features at $15/mo.

Some systems are going to require you host images elsewhere (such as Flickr, Photobucket, etc), whereas other blogging software might allow you to upload and host images as part of your package. Flickr doesn't limit display bandwidth, but with a free account it does have restrictions for how you can link to an image and has a monthly upload limit.

It's always worth it, in my mind, to document what you're doing and why. Who knows, you might be the first person to do the "zomg next mod that everyone has to do", and having it all documented on your blog means it'll be called "The Ben Mod"  ;D

Thanks for the replies people [thumbsup]

Ilk have a look at those options over the conning few days and then get my ass into gear and make a start. As for being a trend setter I very much doubt it! I did start a how to post on the UK monster forum so I could also add that for my can coring guide.

Why can't you start a build thread and post it here? You don't have to log in to view the board so you could just send the thread link to anyone you want.

Go with tumblr, it's free and also has a huge community attached to it. Otherwise get a free Wordpress account on Wordpress.com

Wordpress is free, but has some features that are behind a monthly pay-gate.
