Title: Steering stem / lower triple dissasembly
Post by: Punx Clever on April 30, 2012, 04:04:24 PM
It's been a while since I've posted, but the majority of the bike (S2R1k) is at the powder-coater right now.

Question is, on the steering stem, how does it fit into the lower triple? is it pressed from the top or bottom?  He's having trouble getting it out to to P/C the lower triple.

It's pressed in from the bottom.

IMO, save yourself some hassle and just paint that lower triple.

Its already there with a whole laundry list of parts (Seriously, he has most of the bike). I figured that was how it was done from the shop manual, but the manual doesn't actually describe it, just a cross section view.

Because thats how the P/C'er wanted to do it.

+1 on pressed in from the bottom. The bearing is pressed on also but comes off once the stem gets pressed out. If it has threads on the top end of the stem, run a tap through it to make sure they're good and clean for reassembly. I didn't repress my lower bearing. I found a piece of pipe to tap it back down to seat. Double check head bearings a couple of times after assembly and a couple very short rides to make sure it's right.
