Title: Segways in a whole new light
Post by: triangleforge on June 25, 2008, 09:37:50 AM
When the Segway first came out after all the secrecy, all the hoopla, my first thought was "what a stupid, pointless idea" and my opinion of them has only dropped since then.

But a friend forwarded me a link to a blog post from a fellow I paddled with a couple of times with Team River Runner, a great organization that puts wounded Iraq & Afghan War vets in kayaks (you can read more about TRR here: http://www.teamriverrunner.org/welcome.php )

Daniel's blog post is here: http://www.potomacpaddlers.com/trr/?p=31

He says it a lot better than I can, but the gist of Daniel's post is this: for persons with lower-limb injuries who can stand and therefore don't need a wheelchair, a Segway gets them back a whole lot of the mobility they've lost. But because a lot of people (um... me included) tend to see them as silly yuppie toys, they're forbidden in lots of places that allow motorized wheelchairs (in fact, are required by law to allow wheelchairs).  The Department of Justice is currently accepting public comment on two separate possible rules: one governing Segway use by persons with disabilities in courthouses, post offices & other government buildings, and another for stores, amusement parks, etc. -- all of them places that are already designed to accommodate wheelchair use.

Anyway, I'm a big fan of TRR and am convinced that this is a good thing to lend my support to, and wanted to pass along the info in case some of you are as well.

Cheers,
BRAD

I see them as silly, but I can totally understand how they would be great for people with disabilities.

I'm all for allowing them for the disabled....as long as I don't see morbidly obese people using them instead of walking, like they already do with those sitdown electric carts at Walmart. Those people can walk just fine...I've seen them.  [bang]

Oh and back on point it's cool that they finally found a use for those that can justify the crazy cost of it.
